PREPS Western Reserve finishes its rally



Girard scored late to defeat Warren JFK.
BERLIN CENTER -- McDonald High's Dustin Rivera had 17 strikeouts and pitched a no-hitter through six innings, but Western Reserve rallied with six runs in the bottom of the seventh for a 7-6 victory Monday.
After Jason Young and Adam McDougal walked, Western Reserve's Aaron Mayne hit a three-run homer to break up the no-hitter and make the score 6-4. Chris Mountain, Kyle Kekic and Luke Frock each hit doubles to tie the score at 6, and Steven Lenhart, a pinch-runner, scored the winning run on an error for the Blue Devils (2-1, 1-0 Inter-County League).
Keith Bixler had a double and an RBI for McDonald.
Girard 5, Warren JFK 3: WARREN -- Girard scored two runs in the top of the ninth inning to beat Warren JFK. Greg Cook went 3-for-4 with a double and Randy Mason had two hits for Girard. Matt Zuppo (1-0) got the win in relief. Chris Macali went 2-for-5 for JFK.
Softball: BOARDMAN -- Sophomore Jaclyn Corroto delivered a bases-loaded, two-run single in the last of the fifth to give Boardman a 3-0 win over Cardinal Mooney.
Spartan senior Gina Rango threw a one-hitter at Mooney (2-1, 0-1 Steel Valley Conference). Rango (2-1) struck out seven and walked two.
Western Reserve 9, McDonald 7: BERLIN CENTER -- Kristen Kurth had two hits and Terry Bader added two RBIs for Western Reserve.
Tiffany Shugart (1-0) had seven strikeouts in five innings to pick up the win. Cindy Green and Trish Williams each had a double for McDonald.
South Range 2, Jackson-Milton 0: NORTH JACKSON -- Jen Ridgeway had two singles and an RBI and Amy Algeo had a strong defensive game to lead South Range (4-1, 1-0 ICL) past Jackson-Milton (0-1).
Jenn Toth struck out eight and walked two to improve to 2-1. Corey Velk had a single and nine strikeouts in the loss.
West Branch 10, Salem 0: BELOIT -- Nikki Pierce tossed a one-hitter with 12 strikeouts to lead West Branch (5-0).
Pierce (4-0) added three hits, Taylor Woods had two triples and Ellie Geiger had two hits and two RBIs for the Warriors.
