Neither prayer's absence nor society to blame for problems affecting U.S.
EDITOR:
With all the school shootings that have been happening throughout the country, we tend to hear an older generation of folks saying how the world we live in is such a horrible place.
Well, I was born in 1971, and though I haven't lived in their era, I did pay attention in history class.
I remember that our forefathers, who started this great nation, owned slaves and even fathered children with some. I remember studying about a man named Adolph Hitler who killed over 6 million Jews.
I also recall a time when more than 50,000 Americans were killed in Vietnam, men with wives and children. And how can I forget the films of African-Americans being hosed down in the streets and a great president named JFK being shot and killed?
Now comparing that to today's problems is like apples and oranges.
It isn't society's fault, or God being out of the public school's fault. It's the individual's fault.
All the other negativity is sad. Some of us still have little children to raise, and if we don't give them hope, who will?

Newton Falls wants its fire siren operational
The Newton Falls Firefighters' Auxiliary would like to voice its views regarding the Newton Falls fire siren. We support the use of the fire siren for our community's safety and for the safety of the firefighters responding to calls.
We were under the impression that after all the discussion in the past year, it was decided to keep the siren active.
The siren was damaged during a storm last December. An insurance claim was made and the city was paid by the insurance company for that claim.
What is so hard to understand? If any of us had a property damage claim because of weather, we would turn it into our insurance company and receive the funds to have the damaged property repaired or replaced.
Since the city has received the funds from the insurance company for the damaged siren, why haven't the repairs been made or the siren replaced?
The question should not be, & quot;Do we or do we not have a fire siren?, & quot; but & quot;When are we going to get the fire siren repaired or replaced and back into service? & quot;
We agree with Councilman Harry Benetis, that the issue of the siren has gone on long enough, but we also thought that the decision to keep the siren had already been made.
Why has the question of the fire siren been brought up again?

Cut managers bonuses
EDITOR:
So the U.S. Postal Service is losing millions. Plans are for five-day delivery service and the consolidation of plants and offices. The price of stamps probably will go up again. Cutbacks are in order.
I hope that the postmaster general plans to include in those cuts the thousands of dollars in bonuses doled out each year to middle and upper management. The people who do the real work, (like post office personnel and carriers) receive no such bonuses.
I'm sure that would save the post office a bundle of money.
