YOUNGSTOWN Witnesses at boy's shooting refuse to go on the record
The 16-year-old is the city's 11th homicide victim of 2001.
YOUNGSTOWN -- Police responded to a call about gunfire on Hillman Street to find 30 teen-agers crowding around the bleeding body of Brandon M. Pete, 16, of Willis Street.
Brandon was declared dead at the scene, the city's 11th homicide victim of the year. He was shot multiple times in the body and head, reports say.
Although there were many people around when police arrived at 12:30 a.m. Saturday, no one wanted to go on the record as a witness, reports say. Brandon's body was found on a sidewalk near the south wall of 2530 Hillman St., near Sherwood Avenue.
As police pushed back the crowd to preserve the crime scene, a man yelled out that the gunman had fled south on Hillman in a light blue Oldsmobile Delta.
When approached by police for more information, the man told police "I didn't see anything. I just told you what I heard from other people," reports say.
According to reports, an unidentified witness told police the gunman fired 10 to 20 shots from the car with an AK-47 semiautomatic rifle.
After police photographers combed over the scene, the boy's body was identified by his mother, Ellamae Pete, then taken for examination by the county coroner.
There were 11 homicides in the city at this time last year.
