Ex-POW event
A special ceremony will be conducted from 4 to 6 p.m. Monday, National Former Prisoners of War Recognition Day, at McKay Auditorium, Beeghley College of Education, Youngstown State University. Former prisoners or war, widows of prisoners of war and the general public are invited to the event, which will feature speakers, The Rayen School concert band, and Veterans Affairs representatives to assist veterans and their widows with questions about their VA benefits. The event will be coordinated by Rolling Thunder, Ohio Chapter 4.
Hall of Fame
The Ohio Veterans Hall of Fame is accepting nomination for the Class of 2001. Nominees must have been born in Ohio or resided here for at least five years, have been honorably discharged and have a distinguished community service record. About 20 veterans a year are selected by an executive committee for induction in November at Veterans Memorial in Columbus. VFW officers
VFW Post 3307, Youngstown, elected officers for the 20001-2002 year. They are: commander, William Kohn; senior vice commander, Richard Greene; junior vice commander, Craig Sargent; quartermaster, Frank A. Russo; judge advocate, Gerald Hartman; surgeon, Charles Orr; chaplain, Paul R. Schell; three-year trustee, Ralph Connor.
Health screenings
The Butler Veterans Affairs Medical Center Mobile Outreach Team will provide free health evaluations from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 24 at American Legion Post 299 in Sharon and April 26 at VFW Post 128 in Rochester, Pa. Veterans should bring their discharge papers.
Members sought
The Old Guard Association, formed in 1998 and consisting of current and former members of the Army's 3rd Infantry Regiment, is seeking members. For membership information or to obtain a free copy of the association newsletter, contact Membership Committee, The Old Guard Association, 1000 Winchell Road, Aurora, Ohio 44202. Interested people should provide information about when they served in the 3rd Infantry and the company and battalion to which they were attached.
