SHARON, Pa. -- Sharon Regional Health System has added the practice of off-pump heart surgery to the procedures available at its Heart Institute. The new procedure is less invasive than other surgical practices for heart surgery, according to Sharon Regional. It involves placing one or more bypass grafts on the beating heart, eliminating the use of a heart-lung machine and associated methods of stopping the heart during surgery.
Totals announced
CANFIELD -- The Mahoning Valley American Cancer Society has raised $68,000 from its Kids Coins for Cancer and Spinning for a Cure fund-raisers. Proceeds go toward research, education and service. Canfield Middle School raised the most money, $3,085, of the 27 schools that participated in the Kids Coins contest. Johnny G, the founder of Spinning, was a featured guest during the spinning event.
Accreditation awarded
YOUNGSTOWN -- St. Elizabeth Health Center has been granted accreditation by the American Association of Blood Banks. The AABB's voluntary accreditation procedures promote expertise that lead to excellence. Its more than 2,000 members are responsible for collecting all of the blood used for patient care in the United States.
Health screenings
SALEM -- AMBA Wellness Programs of West Amherst, N.Y., and the Salem Lions Club will provide blood screenings from 6:30 to 9:30 a.m. April 21 at the United Steelworkers of America Local 1538. A 38-test blood screening costs $36. An optional prostate cancer test ($28), a colon-rectal cancer screening kit ($3) and a Thyroxine test ($10) are available. Diabetes event planned
