INDIANS NOTEBOOK From Jacobs Field

Key switch: Orioles right-fielder Brady Anderson said he asked center-fielder Melvin Mora to switch sides during a 10th-inning shift for a five-man infield. "I think Grover [manager Mike Hargrove] would have switched us [anyhow], but I asked him and he said he felt better in right-center," Anderson said. Hargrove confirmed he would have made the move had they not already done so. "Both arms are comparable," Hargrove said, "but Brady feels more comfortable in left because he's left-handed."
Close call: The Orioles came close to going ahead in the 10th inning when Greg Myers hit a lead-off single off reliever Steve Karsay, Jerry Hairston advanced him with a sacrifice and Anderson was intentionally walked. After Mike Bordick popped out to catcher Eddie Taubensee for the second out, things became scary for the Tribe. Reliever Ricardo Rincon walked Delino DeShields on four straight pitches, but closed the inning when David Segui hit a fielder's choice to third baseman Russell Branyan.
Major League debut: Twenty-year-old left-hander C.C. Sabathia will make his major league debut today against the Orioles' Chuck McElroy. Two years ago, Sabathia's second professional season began with the Class A Mahoning Valley Scrappers. Recovering from an bone bruise on his pitching elbow, Sabathia made six starts with the Scrappers before being promoted. Last year, he split the season with Class A Kinston and Class AA Akron. "I've never seen him throw," said Hargrove, who was the Indians manager in 1999. "We're going to try to work on the counts and be patient. We have no preconceived notions."
E6 again: Indians shortstop Omar Vizquel made his second error in three games. In the seventh inning, Vizquel charged and missed a ground ball hit by Greg Myers. Vizquel also booted a ball in Wednesday's 8-4 win over the White Sox.
Doubleplays: The Indians turned doubleplays in the second, fourth and seventh innings.
Extra innings: The Orioles (3-2) are 2-0 in extra-inning games. ... The Indians' bullpen had not been scored upon in the first four games of the 2001 season until the Orioles scored twice off losing pitcher Steve Reed. ... Designated hitter Jay Gibbons' base hit in the second inning was his first in the majors. ... Ellis Burks' second-inning home run was his first as an American Leaguer since Aug. 31, 1993, when he homered for the White Sox against the Yankees.
On deck: The Tribe opens a 10-game road trip with three games in Chicago's Comiskey Park Monday. Chuck Finley (1-0, 5.68) will oppose Cal Eldred (0-1, 18.00) in a rematch of last Wednesday's game at Jacobs Field. Tuesday, Indians right-hander Tim Drew makes his season debut against left-hander Mark Buehrle. Wednesday afternoon, Dave Burba (0-0, 4.05) goes against the White Sox's Jim Parque (0-0, 7.20).
