HIGH SCHOOL SOFTBALL Poland sweeps Tigers in impromptu twinbill
The Bulldogs and Springfield weren't supposed to play until the weather intervened.
NEW MIDDLETOWN -- When the Poland High softball team discovered its field was un-playable due to heavy rain, the Bulldogs' doubleheader with Cuyahoga Falls was postponed Saturday.
But, when Poland coach Reid Lamport heard Springfield diamond was playable and the Tigers had the day off, the neighboring schools got together for an impromptu twinbill.
Sara Knill (3-0) threw a two-hitter as Poland defeated the Tigers 3-1 in the opener, and Jessie Lamport (1-1) fired a four-hitter in the nightcap as the Bulldogs prevailed 11-3.
The teams were not scheduled to meet in the regular season.
Tiffany Fonagy had a triple while Jessie Lamport and Knill doubled in the opener for the Bulldogs (4-1).
Knill finished with three hits and four RBIs, Sue Olesko had three hits and three RBIs while Katie Naumoff had three hits and four runs scored for Poland. Maggie Marsh and Renee Warren each had two hits on the day for the Tigers (4-4).
Mineral Ridge 4-8, Crestview 2-3: MINERAL RIDGE -- Rams pitcher Ashley Ault picked up the victory in each game to improve her record to 6-0.
In the opener, Ault had eight strikeouts and no walks in going the distance. Mineral Ridge (6-0) scored three runs in the third inning, highlighted by Katie Olive's two-run double, and never trailed.
Pitcher Dayna Papania struck out four and walked five in taking the loss for the Rebels (4-6).
In the second game, Ault had 10 strikeouts and no walks and was relieved by Brandi McLean in the seventh inning. Olive tripled home two runs for Mineral Ridge, and Papania doubled for Crestview.
Mineral Ridge plays Monday at South Range.
