DESIGN WINNERS Silver and gold
Elizabeth Jones, former chief engraver at the Mint, has won the competition to design both sides of the $5 gold coin marking the bicentennial of the U.S. Capitol. The 2001 coin will be issued to benefit the Capitol Visitors Center. The silver dollar designs were won by Mariko Somogyi for the obverse and John Mercanti of the Philadelphia Mint for the reverse. Dean McMullen of Portland, Ore., will design the obverse of the half-dollar, and Marcel Jovine of Cloister, N.J., and Alex Shagin of Los Angeles will share the reverse design. Jones headed a distinguished era at the Mint. During her tenure, the United States won international recognition in the Coin of the Year competitions.
