Committee seeks donations for Buhl Day celebration

HERMITAGE, Pa. -- Thousands of people flock to Buhl Farm each Labor Day for the annual Buhl Day celebration, but few are aware of the cost that goes into holding the event.
This year's budget is $27,000, said James B. Winner of Sharon, who, with his wife, Joyce, is serving as chairman of the fund-raising arm of the Buhl Day Committee.
Letters seeking contributions to help meet that cost have been sent to area residents, businesses and friends of Buhl Day who have supported the event in the past, Winner said.
"Buhl Day represents the best of our community. It's a great day to see family and neighbors in a beautiful setting," he said.
Buhl Day is the community's response to the gift of the late industrialist Frank H. Buhl and his wife, Julia, who set the park aside for public recreation.
Taking a toll: Rising costs take a toll on everyone, said Karen Campman Emmett, chairwoman of this year's event.
"Buhl Day is a day filled with great music, entertainment and events and can only be described as small-town America at its finest," she said.
The effort is funded entirely by donations and everyone's support is needed, she said.
The day begins with a 5K race and a parade and features a variety of food, games and music for all ages. The daylong celebration is capped by a fireworks display.
Anyone wishing to make donations can send contributions to the Buhl Day Committee in care of James B. and Joyce Winner, 1469 McDowell St., Sharon, Pa. 16146.
