HIRAM -- Brian Frasco from Hubbard and Ursuline High and Dom Yazbek from Chaney High have emerged as two of the leaders of the Hiram College baseball team through last Thursday.
The two bellwethers, who are among nine Youngstown-area players for the Terriers, have helped the team to a 12-7 record, including 1-1 in the North Coast Athletic Conference for coach Howard Jenter.
Frasco, a senior pitcher, led the team in three statistical categories -- hits (30), RBIs (24) and runs (26) -- and was No. 3 in batting average (.462 on 30-for-65) among the regulars.
He trailed leader Yazbek (.526 on 20-for-38) and Greg Namestnik (.552 on 16-for-29).
Yazbek, a sophomore pitcher, also led the team in homers (3) and had a third-best 19 RBIs.
More standouts: Two other area players -- Joe Detoro, senior catcher from Poland, and Charles Williams, senior outfielder from LaBrae -- also have been standouts. Detoro batted .383 (18-for-47) and Williams .338 (22-for-65).
Frasco also has been one of the mound aces with a 2-1 record and 2.00 earned run average with 12 strikeouts and only one walk. In fact, he almost pitched a perfect game against Cedarville College March 23, and for that performance was named the North Coast Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week.
Frasco had a perfect game going entering the seventh inning before giving up his first hit. He finished with a 1-hit, 8-0 victory, striking out six and walking none for his first win of the season.
Second win: Then he went on to post his second victory of the year in a 7-3 win over the College of Wooster on March 31, in the nightcap of a doubleheader that gave the Terriers a split. He drove in two runs, too.
Taking the mound loss for Wooster was Nic Moga, a junior from Boardman High who gave up six runs, three of them unearned, over five innings of work. That defeat gave Moga a 1-1 record. He had pitched 20.2 innings with 15 strikeouts and a 3.05 earned run average.
Williams, who had been in an early-season hitting slump, pulled out of it with 6-for-8 at the plate, four runs scored and one RBI during a recent three-game span. He also had a stolen base to take the team lead.
Yazbek and Matt Ruby, a sophomore pitcher from Jackson-Milton, each has a 2-0 record. Ruby has a 2.77 ERA, Yazbek 3.00.
Others: Rounding out the area contingent are Mike Drabek, junior pitcher from Warren JFK; Chris Haines, junior outfielder from Howland; Bill Bowers, freshman infielder from Kennedy Christian; Adam Morgan, freshman catcher from Southington Chalker; Matt Robison, freshman pitcher from Wilmington, and Justin Joseph, freshman second baseman from New Castle.
