TURKEY FACTS Ohio and Pennsylvania



The spring wild turkey season opens April 23 and closes May 13 in Ohio. In Pennsylvania the season runs from April 28 to May 26.
Limit: Ohio - One bearded turkey per hunter per spring season; A second wild turkey may be taken by persons purchasing a special bonus turkey permit. The special bonus turkey permit is only available when purchased with the spring turkey permit and is valid for all three weeks of the season. Only one bird may be taken per day; Pennsylvania - one gobbler or bearded bird.
Weapons allowed: Ohio - Only shotguns using shot, longbows and crossbows permitted; Pennsylvania - shotguns plugged to three-shell capacity in the chamber and magazine combined, muzzleloading shotguns, and bows with broadhead arrows of cutting-edge design. Shot size must be No. 4 or smaller and either tungsten-iron, bismuth-tin or No. 2 steel. Rifle-shotgun combinations are allowed.
Hours: Both states - 30 minutes before sunrise to noon.
Special instructions: Ohio - Using bait, live decoys or electronic calling devices are illegal. A wild turkeys may not be shot while it is in a tree; Pennsylvania - hunters must wear a minimum of 100-square inches of hunter or fluorescent orange-colored clothing when moving through the woods. The orange may be removed when the hunter reaches their calling destination, but an orange alert band tied to a tree by the hunter is recommended.
Harvest: Ohio - Hunters who bag a turkey must immediately fill out and attach a tag to the bird and bring the carcass with head, feathers and feet attached, to a check station by 2 p.m. the day the bird is shot; Pennsylvania - Successful turkey hunters must properly tag shot birds and report the harvest to the Game Commission in Harrisburg within 10 days, using the postage-paid report card provided with their hunting license. The area where the bird was harvested must be identified on the card.
