PREP SOFTBALL Ozias fires 4-hitter to beat Poland



Mooney rallied for a win while Niles and Struthers captured non-league games.
AUSTINTOWN -- In a game that produced only nine hits, Brianna Ozias fired a four-hitter and struck out nine, improving her record to 4-0, as the Austintown Fitch High softball team defeated Poland, 3-2, Thursday.
After Poland scored two runs in the top of the fifth, Fitch junior Joanna Fergus tied the game with a single, driving in Julie Ledford and Andrea Diyorio.
Ozias pushed across the go-ahead run when Shannon McGlynn scored on a fielder's choice.
Fergus finished with two hits while Julie Ledford, Nastasja Faison and Angela Zdelar had one apiece for the Falcons (5-2).
Emily Patton, Jessica Lamport, Stephanie Russell and Aslyna Rodriguez had the hits -- all singles -- for Poland (2-1).
Mooney 7, JFK 5: WARREN -- Trailing 5-4, Mooney (4-1) scored three runs in the top of the seventh inning.
Sarah Wright's walk forced in Adrienne Detesco to tie the score and Danielle Kepics' single knocked in the final two runs.
Wright finished with a single and double while Kepics, the winning pitcher, had a single and double with three RBIs.
It was the third time Mooney (4-1) has won in its last at-bat.
Lindsey Rapone had two hits and three RBIs for JFK.
Chaney 2, Ursuline 0: YOUNGSTOWN -- Tara Mshar (3-0), a junior, scattered five hits and struck out 10 to pick up the win.
In the first inning, Chaney's Amanda Buzzacco singled, moved to second on a sacrifice and scored on a single by Mshar.
Angela Armstrong led the Cowboys with a double and single. Mshar added two singles.
Niles 15, Wilson 1: NILES -- Sophomore Maria Caicco struck out 11, walked two and allowed just five hits in picking up her first varsity victory.
Leading the Niles attack was Kara Kover, who had two singles and a double with three RBIs. Alicia Mikesell added a single and double while driving in two runs.
For Wilson, Jessica Martinez and Deidra Rosario had two hits apiece. Nicole Peasley took the loss.
Struthers 5, Springfield 1: STRUTHERS -- Laura Bell drove in the go-ahead run in the fourth inning on a fielder's choice.
The Wildcats (4-2) scored three runs in the sixth as Holly Hickenbottom singled. Jaime Zupko was hit by a pitch.
Kristina Vecchione sacrificed and when the throw to third was late the bases were loaded. Jessica Sodeman singled home Hickenbottom. Bell singled in Zupko and Katy Shurilla singled home Vecchione.
Lori Singer (1-0) went the distance to pick up the win. She also hit two singles. Renee Warren also hit a pair of singles. Shurilla hit a double and single for Struthers.
Lowellville 16, Rayen 0: LOWELLVILLE -- Senior Missy Fredericks pitched a no-hitter while senior Jen Balogh and sophomores Jen Blinsky and Ashley Tych all went 2-for-2 and senior Lauren Shevetz 2-for-3 for Lowellville (2-2).
Fredericks had eight strikeouts, but one batter reached base against her on an error.
Girard 6, Mathews 2: GIRARD -- Senior Trish Christopher, junior Kelly Thomas and freshmen Angela DiPiero and Shannon Sleyzak had two hits apiece for Girard (2-4, 0-3 Trumbull Athletic Conference).
Junior Amber Knoll was the winning pitcher and her single knocked in the go-ahead run when senior Maria Kaip scored in the fourth inning. Thomas and Sleyzak each had a double.
Shreves had three hits for Mathews.
Western Reserve 7, Waterloo 0: BERLIN CENTER -- Sophomore Mikah Berger (3-0) gave up five hits, and had seven strikeouts and no walks as the Blue Devils (7-1) won their sixth game in a row.
Senior Rhonda Barth had a double and single, junior Beth Aurin had two singles while Tiffany Palumbo and Teri Bader each had a triple for Western Reserve.
Kelly Markham had two singles for Waterloo (0-4).
