PREP BASEBALL Rayen pulls out 15-12 win over Wilson in 10th
It was the Tigers first win of the season in a City Series contest.
YOUNGSTOWN -- A three-run rally in the top of the 10th inning gave The Rayen School baseball team its first victory, 15-12 over City Series rival Wilson Thursday at Pemberton-Donnell Park.
A two-run double by Jamal Monroe and a run-scoring single by William Jones were the deciding hits for the Tigers (1-3).
Dennis Parise, Rayen's coach said," This was just an outstanding game by both teams. Even the crowd got into it."
Rayen built a 11-7 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh inning.
The Redmen scored four runs to send it into extra innings.
"Give Wilson a lot of credit because in the bottom of the seventh with two out and two strikes on their batter, they rallied to tie it," said Parise.
The Tigers got a run in the ninth as O'Brien Wall scored on a double by Eddie Williams.
Wilson's Danny Durkin worked the count to get a walk. He stole second and third and scored on a two-out single to tie it again.
"Our kids got pumped up in the 10th inning," said Parise. "With two away, they fought back to score those three runs.
"They learned to fight back from adversity. After Wilson tied it in the seventh, we regrouped and that just may have jump-started us for the rest of the season."
Wall paced Rayen with a double and three singles. He scored five times, stole three bases and scored once.
He also pitched six innings to pick up the win.
Jamal Johnson of the Tigers went 4-for-5, all singles, scored twice and drove in five runs.
Canfield 9, Chaney 3: CANFIELD -- The Cardinals put the game out of reach with a five-run rally in the sixth inning.
Tom Banna led Canfield (5-2) with three singles. He stole a base and scored once.
Paul Suhar hit a home run and single and Nick Guerrieri hit a double and single, stole a base and scored once.
Jaun Serrano hit a home run for the Cowboys (1-3).
Boardman 9, Niles 0: BOARDMAN -- Giancarlo Silvestri hit a three-run homer, driving in Rick Mosco and Nelson Navaro, and Chris King drove in three runs leading the Spartans to their sixth win.
Kevin Gesacion was a home run short of hitting for the cycle, going 3-for-4 in the leadoff spot. Dennis Golubec earned his second win by striking out three and giving up five hits over six innings.
John Bisker (1-1) took the loss for Niles (3-2), striking out three and giving up one walk.
Poland 6, Lakeview 0: POLAND -- The Bulldogs (4-2) scored two runs in the third inning, one in the fourth, then iced it with three more in the fifth.
Jason Wheatley (1-0) worked six innings to pick up the victory.
Fitch 11, Campbell 1: AUSTINTOWN -- Junior Steve Burnich had three hits, junior Josh Starr had two doubles and senior Jim Polish had a double and knocked in two runs for Fitch (4-2).
Winning pitcher Shawn Barber allowed just three hits in five innings of work.
The junior had seven strikeouts for the Falcons before being relieved by Ryan Banfield in the sixth.
Fred Ramos, Aaron Dobich and Erik Bonilla each had a single for Campbell (1-4).
Girard 13, Mathews 2: GIRARD -- Senior Mike Williams, junior Shawn Petrarca and sophomore Elliott Steverson had two hits apiece while freshman Dan O'Neill had a single and three RBIs.
One of Petrarca's hits was a triple and one of Steverson's was a double for Girard (2-3).
Senior Mike Pearson had a no-hitter through 41/3 innings before giving up a single to Mark Burcham. Pearson (1-1) fanned six and walked one.
Rob Mikolaj had the only other hit for Mathews.
Warren JFK 13, Badger 1: WARREN -- In his first varsity start, freshman Mike Ellis threw a four-hitter and struck out six, while senior Nelson Thomas had two home runs and a single to spark JFK (3-1).
Juniors Matt Barren and Mike Ambeliotis had two singles while junior Chris Cannan had a bases-loaded triple.
Coleman doubled and singled for Badger (2-4).
Southeast 4, Jackson-Milton 3: NORTH JACKSON -- A single by Luke Kehres knocked in Brent Hilliard with the Pirates' fourth run in the top of the seventh and Southeast (3-2) hung on for the win. Hilliard's two-out double put him in scoring position.
Mike Canale had two singles for Southeast (3-2).
Jon Hochendoner had three singles, Al Stevens two singles and Vince McLarren two singles and two RBIs for the Bluejays (3-4).
Hubbard 3, LaBrae 1: HUBBARD -- Trailing 1-0, Hubbard scored three runs with the help of miscues during two pickoff attempts in the bottom of the sixth inning in the Trumbull Athletic Conference game.
Ron DeJulio and Matt Marshall each had two hits while Mark Barca doubled for the Eagles (1-3, 1-1). Junior Kevin Libeg (1-0) picked up the win in relief.
Carrollton 8, West Branch 7: CARROLLTON -- Carrollton snapped a 7-7 tie with a run in the seventh inning.
For Carrollton, Andy Dillon and Derek DeChellis had two hits apiece while Justin Bolmgren doubled. For West Branch (3-3), Don Close and Todd Mast had three hits apiece while Matt Martig had two hits and a pair of RBIs.
