WARREN 2nd official leaves IUE post at Delphi
WARREN -- The union at Delphi Packard Electric Systems has two new leaders after a second official resigned a top post.
Nick Border, president of Local 717 of the International Union of Electrical Workers, told the union staff Wednesday that he has accepted a job with the international union.
As of April 23, Border will be director of health care initiatives for the union's conference board, which negotiates national contracts. He will be based in Warren.
Recent retirement: He follows Bob Sutton, who resigned as shop chairman to become secretary of the conference board. Sutton announced his retirement last month, but it was effective Sunday.
Under union bylaws, Vice President Charlotte Ingalls will fill Border's term, which runs until October. An election will be in September.
Border appointed Terry Gruver, assistant shop chairman, to fill Sutton's term.
Nominations for both positions will be taken in July.
Border said the new position interests him because he thinks he can continue to serve the members of Local 717. The position involves working with the United Auto Workers to look for ways to reduce health care costs.
Border, 52, told members in January that he didn't intend to run for re-election.
"These are not lifetime positions. I think some people become stagnant when they've been in a position so long," he said.
Wasn't sure: Border, who has been president since 1995, said he wasn't sure until the conference board made the offer whether he was going to retire, go back into the plant or take another union job.
The health-care job came open in December with the death of James Altier Sr.
