HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL Zitkovic, Getsy no-hitters full of strikeouts



NEW MIDDLETOWN -- Senior Bobby Zitkovic threw a no-hitter with 15 strikeouts Tuesday as Springfield High's baseball blanked Mathews 6-0 in an Inter-County League game.
Zitkovic, in the first no-hitter of his career, allowed just two base runners, both on walks.
The Tigers collected solo runs in the second and third innings and a three-run homer by Jimmy Schuler in the fifth iced the win.
Zitkovic also had two hits for the Tigers (2-1, 1-1 ICL). Mathews is 0-1, 0-1.
Lowellville 10, Rayen 0: LOWELLVILLE -- Nick Getsy pitched a no-hitter, with 14 strikeouts.
He walked just one.
Matt Sheely of the Rockets (3-2) hit two singles and scored once.
Nick Pope hit a double and single and Don Packner two singles.
Ursuline 7, Liberty 4: STRUTHERS -- Erin Satterlee had two hits and two RBIs for the Irish (3-0).
Ursuline's John Angelo had two hits and drove in a run. Reliever Pat Sipusic won his first game.
Liberty's Joe Lopez had a pair of hits.
Austintown Fitch 7, Jackson-Milton 3: NORTH JACKSON -- Terry DeSalvo's two-run single in the third inning put the Falcons (3-1) ahead for good.
Beau Banfield led the Fitch attack with three hits. Brandon Chine pitched into the fifth inning to record the win.
For Jackson-Milton (3-2), Josh Kosa, Jim Ferrante and Jon Hochendoner each had two hits.
Poland 12, Niles 1: NILES -- Senior Jeff Nastase threw a two-hitter and contibuted three hits for Poland.
One of Nastase's hits was a double. He scored three runs while striking out eight Red Dragons batters.
Cody Holecko added two hits and three runs scored for Poland (4-0, 1-0 Metro Athletic Conference) while Shane Davis had two hits and three RBIs.
Jimmy Mitolo had two hits and two RBIs while Ted Russell collected two hits and two RBIs.
Sean Clayton had two hits while Jeff Moore had a single and a double.
Niles fell to 3-1, 0-1.
Canfield 5, Howland 1: CANFIELD -- Tom Banna paced the Cardinals (4-2, 1-0 MAC) with three singles. He scored twice, stole two bases and drove in a run.
Dan Zapko hit a double and single, and drove in a run.
Howland (2-1, 0-1) was limited to four hits.
Struthers 3, Salem 1: SALEM -- Pat Watt (2-0) threw a three-hit complete game.
The Struthers (4-0, 0-1) ace struck out 12 and walked none.
The Quakers dropped to 1-2, 0-1.
Youngstown Christian 13, Wilson 2: YOUNGSTOWN -- Winning pitcher Matt Byrdy contributed three hits, including a double.
He also struck out nine Wilson batters.
Chris Simms and Mike Byrdy each had two hits.
Western Reserve 11, Southern 3: BERLIN CENTER -- Winning pitcher Kyle Kekic had two hits and drove in a run for the Blue Devils (4-2).
Luke Srock had two hits and two RBIs for Western Reserve while Andrew Lenhart had two hits and one run driven home.
South Range 16, Beaver Local 6: LISBON -- Winning pitcher George Rohan (1-0) went 4-for-4 and had four RBIs for the Raiders (3-2).
Jim Sander's two hits included a double and he drove in three runs.
Also with two hits were Jeff Johnston, Jason King and Hogie Walley.
Mineral Ridge 9, Newton Falls 3: NEWTON FALLS -- Senior catcher Kendall Kokoski had four hits and scored three times for the Rams (3-2).
For the Tigers, Jason Spahlinger, Scott Wilson and Dave Montgomery each had two hits.
Warren JFK 7, Pymatuning Valley 2: WARREN -- Justin Eshman went 3-for-3 with a double for the Eagles (2-1).
Marlington 10, West Branch 7: ALLIANCE -- The Warriors let leads of 3-0, 5-3 and 7-5 slip away in the sixth and seventh innings.
Drew Romigh homered and singled for West Branch (3-2, 1-2 Northeastern Buckeye Conference). Don Close, Josh Hurford and Matt Sobotka all singled twice, while James Crutchley doubled. Hurford drove in three runs.
Marlington (5-2) pitcher Ryan Wittensolder hurled a complete game; he struck out 10 batters and walked none.
