No primary in Leetonia
LEETONIA -- There will be no primary election in Leetonia, because the race for four village council seats is no longer contested. David Tingle of Honey Lane has withdrawn from the race, said John Payne, county board of elections director. Remaining candidates are newcomer Daniel P. Summers of Lisbon Street and incumbents Alice Grubbs, William Garlough and Daniel Valentine. The four are all Democrats. Incumbent Doug Roose did not file.
School's cable stolen
HERMITAGE, Pa. -- Someone stole $10,000 worth of copper cable from the Hickory High School construction project over the weekend. Police said four cables, each 300 feet long, were stolen. The cables were taken from an underground conduit carrying power to the school building. The theft occurred between 7 p.m. Friday and 7 a.m. Monday.
Concert subscriptions
SALEM -- The subscription campaign of the Northern Columbiana County Community Concert Association will be from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday through Friday and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at Timberlanes restaurant. Performances include comedian Robert Post in September, violinist Linda Wang in November, folk dance company Frula in January, and bluegrass-folk band Wood's Tea Company in February. All performances will be at 7:30 p.m. at Salem High School. There will be no single-performance sales. Cost is $30 for adults, $15 for students and $70 for families, including two adults and any children in the home under 18.
Hanover road closed
HANOVERTON -- Mechanicstown Road in Hanover Township closed Monday for widening and realignment of about 3/10 mile of that county road and 1/2 mile of state Route 644, Ohio Department of Transportation has announced. Two lanes of traffic will be maintained on Route 644 at all times. BOG Construction of Berlin Center has the $838,956 contract for the project, slated for completion by July 31.
Pavilion prices
NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- Borough council raised the rates Monday for renting the pavilion at the borough park to $30 for a half-day and $50 for a full day. Increases will not be effective until next year.
Arrested in gun threat
SHARON, Pa.-- Police said they arrested a Papa John's Pizza employee after he threatened to shoot his manager during an argument. Glenn M. Boller, 26, of Orchard Street, was charged with making terroristic threats Sunday night. He was arraigned and freed on a $5,000 unsecured bond.
Cocaine, pot charges
FARRELL, Pa. -- Police said a man they stopped in the 300 block of Idaho Street for public intoxication wound up in jail on more serious charges. Police said they found suspected crack cocaine and marijuana on Robert Coleman, 20, of Spearman Avenue, after stopping him around 2:35 a.m. Monday. He was arraigned before District Justice Henry Russo on charges of possession of a controlled substance, public drunkenness and resisting arrest and was ordered held in Mercer County Jail on $3,000 bond and a parole detainer for violating terms of his parole from a previous offense.
Burglaries reported
SHARON, Pa. -- Police in three Shenango Valley departments are investigating burglaries reported over the last several days. Sharon police said someone broke into a storage shed in the 500 block of "B" Street Saturday night and stole more than $1,300 worth of tools, including a Honda generator and a 500-piece Craftsman tool set. Hermitage police said someone entered an unlocked garage in the 2000 block of Parkdale Avenue Thursday or Friday and took $400 worth of tools, including a table saw and a cordless drill/saw combo. Southwest Mercer County Regional Police said someone broke into a home in the 900 block of Lee Avenue, Farrell, Sunday night and stole a camera and telephone.
