NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- Swimmers will pay more to use the borough swimming pool this summer.
Borough council agreed to the first increase in daily swim rates since 1994 when it met Monday.
Adult daily rates will increase from $2.50 to $3, and children four to 12 will pay $1.75 instead of $1.50. Children 3 and under continue to swim free.
Guest passes for borough residents rise from $9 to $10 for a 12-swim pass and from $5 to $6 for a weekly pass.
Council also hired lifeguards, substitute lifeguards, pool manager and substitute pool managers, a water safety instructor for children's classes and a lifeguard training teacher.
Parking problem: In other business, council heard Sandy Aquaro, owner of The Tavern, a local restaurant, complain that her parking spaces are being used by customers at the former Kaufman building on property adjacent to her business.
She said she gets hostile reactions when she asks the customers to move their cars and asked council's help to resolve the matter.
After discussion, council agreed to check whether any zoning rules are being violated at the building regarding the number of available parking spaces.
Council approved an increase in commercial and industrial zoning permits, which are now $45. The charge will now be $45 for buildings up to 5,000 square feet, $100 up to 25,000 square feet and $250 for more than 25,000 square feet.
Council also approved advertising of several changes to the zoning ordinance, including clarifying definitions of single, multi- and two-family dwellings and rules on how far adult businesses must be from schools and churches. A public hearing will be scheduled before the changes are adopted.
Borough Manager Fred Garrett reported that a large number of tires have been removed from the Jeemco property off Neshannock Avenue and that an accumulation of trash and debris has been cleaned up at Kulkin Rentals, 203 E. Neshannock Ave. Both had been the subject of residents' complaints.
