LISBON -- A Warren attorney is appealing to the 7th District Court of Appeals a contempt finding that resulted in her being ordered to serve a two-day sentence in the Columbiana County jail.
Common Pleas Judge C. Ashley Pike found Toni Marcheskie in contempt Dec. 14 for failing to appear Oct. 26 at a sentence review hearing for a client. Marcheskie's sentence has been stayed pending her appeal.
Vacant-house fire
NILES -- The cause of a fire at a vacant Clay Street house is undetermined. Firefighters responded about 10:31 p.m. Monday to the fire at 806 Clay St., owned by David Mask, who was arrested last month on charges of drug trafficking.
The house is valued at about $40,000 and the fire caused about $25,000 damage, firefighters said.
Officers from the Niles Police Narcotics Unit, Trumbull County Drug Task Force, Ohio Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation and federal agents from the Youngstown office of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms arrested Mask, 53, March 21, charging him with four counts of aggravated trafficking in cocaine.
He remains in Trumbull County Jail.
Dead man identified
HOWLAND -- The Ohio State Highway Patrol has identified John T. Routh of Main Avenue as the man found dead Sunday on a road.
The 29-year-old man was found on DeForest Avenue about 9 p.m. Results of an autopsy performed Monday by the Trumbull County Coroner's Office were not available.
Police think someone struck Routh.
Special Olympics event
WARREN -- CarQuest, at 147 Pine St. S.E., is hoping to raise $500 this week for the Special Olympics.
Kevin Middleton said the company is an international partner in the law enforcement torch run that is part of the athletic contests designed for people with special needs.
There will be a fund-raiser from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the shop.
Activities will include raffles, a carwash, car inspections and demonstrations by Warren Fire Department and the police department's K-9 unit.
The torch run and a track and field event will be at The Ohio State University on June 28.
Food and refreshments will be served at the fund-raiser. Other sponsors are Giant Eagle, Booker's, F & amp;S Auto Service and Al's Tire and Auto Body.
Cortland contracts
CORTLAND -- City council approved two contracts Monday: $2,860 to Thomas Fok & amp; Associates to survey and lay out utility relocations necessary for the South High Street widening project and $3,900 to Main Lite Electric of Warren to install a pedestrian-activated traffic signal for the elementary school crosswalk at Pearl Street.
Police chief Gary Mink told council a $1,116 Local Law Enforcement Block Grant will be used to buy digital cameras and possibly create and maintain a police department Web page.
Mink reported that his department handled 157 total reports in March, including 67 criminal complaints. Nineteen people were arrested and 22 charges were filed.
Bazetta trustees
BAZETTA -- Township trustees approved a nearly $30,000 paving contract Monday. Northern Ohio Paving of Twinsburg was given 120 days to complete the project.
Six contractors submitted bids to pave Janet, Lynn and Andrews drives. Northern Ohio had the low bid at $29,359.14. The others ranged up to $34,706.
Trustees announced an appliance collection for April 27 from 9 a.m. to noon at the Trumbull County engineer's yard at 650 North River Road.
A special meeting was called for Wednesday at 9 a.m., and trustees set a work session for Monday at 7 p.m.
McDonald cleanup
McDONALD -- The village will have its annual cleanup Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in conjunction with the Great American Cleanup. Volunteers are to meet at the fire station. Prizes go to the first 50 arrivals.
