BASEBALL/SOFTBALL S. Range captures win in Florida
Mooney, Boardman and Lakeview posted softball shutouts.
COCOA BEACH, Fla. -- Bobby Miller surrendered one hit in six innings and struck out nine, as the South Range High baseball team defeated a team from Nyack, N.Y., 8-1, Monday.
Jim Sanders and Brad Johnson each had two hits and George Rohan tripled in a run for the Raiders (1-0).
Western Reserve 7, Columbiana 3: COLUMBIANA -- Junior Brandon Keck threw a complete-game three-hitter with 11 strikeouts and one walk for the Blue Devils (1-0).
Chris Mountain had two singles for Western Reserve, which scored twice in the second inning and two more in the third to open a 4-1 lead.
Struthers 5, Mooney 3: STRUTHERS -- Kevin Malarick had a triple, while Jon Neiter and Sean Hall each doubled for the Wildcats.
Jeff Hehr went 3-for-3 for the Cardinals, who fell behind 5-0 after five innings.
Softball: YOUNGSTOWN -- Mooney scored two runs in the sixth inning to break a scoreless tie in a 2-0 win over South Range.
Mooney freshman Gina Berunetti led off the inning with an infield single and Sara Wright doubled off the center-fielder's glove to put runners on second and third. Danielle Kepics hit a ground ball to drive in a run, and the second scored on an overthrow.
Kepics (1-0) pitched a two-hit shutout. Katie Stickel and Wright each had two hits. Jenn Toth (0-1) had 10 strikeouts and no walks for South Range.
Boardman 9, Struthers 0: BOARDMAN -- Gina Rango had three singles and an RBI and Jennifer Pancake pitched six scoreless innings to lead Boardman.
Laura Amero had two singles and an RBI and Jennifer Feret had a single and two RBIs for Boardman (1-0).
West Branch 4, Springfield 1: NEW MIDDLETOWN -- Pitcher Nikkie Pierce had five strikeouts to lead visiting West Branch past Springfield.
The Tigers (0-1) committed nine errors to just one for the Warriors (1-0). Deidre Snively had two hits and an RBI for West Branch. Brooke Szelazek had a hit and an RBI and Maggie Marsh had seven strikeouts for Springfield.
Lakeview 7, Girard 0: GIRARD -- The Bulldogs rode the one-hit pitching performance of Heather Fink in the opener for both teams.
Beth Carney of Girard doubled.
