WARREN Thomas to speak at event
WARREN -- Helen Thomas, a former White House correspondent, will speak at 10:30 a.m. April 18 at W.D. Packard Music Hall as part of the YWCA of Warren's Trumbull Town Hall Celebrity Series.
Thomas retired from United Press International in May 2000 after 57 years. She was a White House correspondent from the Kennedy administration to the Clinton administration. Her journalism career began as a "copy girl" on the Washington Daily News after graduating from Wayne State University. In 1943, she joined UPI and the Washington Press Corps and wrote radio news for UPI for 12 years.
Thomas was the first female officer of the National Press Club after it opened its doors to women, and she was the first female print journalist to travel with a president.
Tickets: A luncheon at the Avalon Inn in Howland and a fashion show presented by Richard's of Warren will follow the lecture. Advance reservations must be made for the luncheon, which costs $11.
Tickets for the lecture are $25 and may be purchased by calling the YWCA of Warren at 330-373-1010. Group tickets and student tickets also are available.
Early season ticket subscribers for the 24th Annual Celebrity Series 2001 to 2002 will receive a free ticket to the lecture. Tickets can be picked up at the door the day of the lecture. New subscriptions must be postmarked by April 13.
Thomas' book "Front Row at the White House" will be on sale at the lecture and luncheon.
