Pinetree Line Web site
Ren L'Ecuyer, a Canadian Air Force retiree, has a Web site for the Canadian and U.S. personnel who served at any of the 44 radar stations and gap filler sites that formed the Pinetree Line in Canada. The American Air Force manned 20 of the radar stations, which were a line of air defense during the Cold War, between 1952 and 1971.
The Pinetree Line Web site, www.pinetreeline.org, has a section for each of the stations, each with its own area for photographs, maps and historical articles. The Web site also has a guest book, an internal message system and a database containing details for 1,400 military personnel.

Medical evaluations
The Mobile Outreach Team of the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Butler, Pa., will provide free medical evaluations to veterans from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 12 at American Legion Post 343 in New Castle. Veterans should bring their discharge papers.

Marine Corps basic
Several area residents have completed Marine Corps basic training at Parris Island, S.C. They include: Pvt. Craig S. Ison Jr. (Cortland Lakeview High School, '00), a son of Mary E. Fox, 1502 Thorpe St., New Castle, Pa.; and Pfc. William M. McCartney (Greenville High School, '00), a son of Michelene McCartney, 27 Saul Ave., Greenville, Pa.
Submarine course
Navy Fireman Recruit William A. Fazenbaker (Lincoln High School of Ellwood City, '00) graduated from the basic enlisted submarine course at Naval Submarine School, Groton, Conn. He is a son of William and Kathy Fazenbaker, 935 Border Ave., Ellwood City.
Combat engineering
Army Pvts. Christopher R. McLaughlin and Sean W. Jordan completed combat engineer advanced individual training at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo. McLaughlin is a son of Tracy A. McLaughlin of East Liverpool. Jordan is a son of Patricia L. Laux and Mel Helsley, both of Sharon.
Signals intelligence
Air Force Airman 1st Class Clinton T. Pavelko (Leetonia High School, '96) completed a signals intelligence apprentice course at Goodfellow Air Force Base, Texas. He is a son of Penny Pavelko, Kelly Park Road, Leetonia, and Thomas Pavelko, Canfield.

Chief petty officer
Navy Chief Petty Officer Donald L. Taylor was promoted to his present rank while serving aboard the fleet ballistic missile submarine USS Main (Gold). He is a son of Donald L. Taylor, 1225 Beech St., New Castle, Pa., and a 1982 graduate of Aliquippa High School.
Technical sergeant
John H. Shade (Newton Falls High School, '88) was selected for promotion to the rank of technical sergeant in the Air National Guard. Shade, a signals intelligence analysis craftsman assigned to the 316th Training Squadron, Goodfellow Air Force Base, Texas, is a son of Eleanor Shade, Ravenna Road, Newton Falls.
