NEW MIDDLETOWN -- A pair of juniors put together fine pitching performances as the Springfield Local High softball team opened the season Saturday with a 6-0, 6-1 doubleheader sweep of Crestview.
Maggie Marsh fired a one-hitter with nine strikeouts in the first game, followed by Ashley Platt with a two-hitter and seven strikeouts in the nightcap.
Jessica Snyder had three singles, while Renee Warren had a single, a double and three RBIs for the Tigers (2-0).
Brooke Szelazek singled twice for the winners.
Erin Peppel doubled for the Rebels (2-3), who turned a triple play in the first inning of the opener.
South Range 3-2, Columbiana 2-1: COLUMBIANA -- Jenn Toth threw a pair of complete games as the Raiders swept the Clippers.
Toth and South Range have 3-1 records.
Ashley Basista doubled in the opener for South Range, while Stevie Goist doubled in the nightcap for the Clippers.
Western Reserve 6-5, Lordstown 0-1: BERLIN CENTER -- Ronda Barth had two hits, one a double, for the Blue Devils (3-1).
In the opener, Jaclyn Speece (2-1) went five innings with seven strikeouts.
Lordstown's record is 1-3.
Struthers 9, Warren Harding 7: WARREN -- Struthers scored all nine of its runs in the fourth inning for a 9-1 lead, and then held off Warren Harding at Lincoln Park.
Holly Hickenbottom slammed three singles and drove in one run, while Heather Hrina had two singles and two RBIs to lead Struthers (1-1). Loriel Singer, Kristina Vecchione and Laura Bell each added two singles and one RBI to aid the Wildcats.
Tina Palumbo gained the mound win over the distance, striking out five.
Harding (1-2) was led by Kiisha Warfield with a double, three singles and one RBI, while Leigh Carlson chipped in with a double, single and two RBIs.
Fitch 2-6, Howland 1-2: AUSTINTOWN -- Nastasja Faison slugged a two-run double to tie the score 2-2, and then Andrea Diyorio followed with a two-run double, as Austintown Fitch rallied for six runs in the top of the seventh to win the nightcap for a sweep of a doubleheader.
The Falcons (2-1) sent 12 batters to the plate in the big inning. Julie Kemesky added two singles for the winners.
In the opener, Brianna Ozias pitched a three-hitter with seven strikeouts, as Fitch rallied for two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to win.
Ozias and Nicole Hahner each had an RBI single in the uprising.
Darcy Quinlan had two singles for Howland (1-2-1).
Boardman 4, Elyria 3: BOARDMAN -- Jennifer Pancake scattered three hits in going the distance for the Spartans. She struck out four.
Jennifer Feret went 2-for-3 with a double and she drove in two runs. Marissa Bartholomew hit a double and single.
Boardman 4, Uniontown Lake 0: Bartholomew (3-0) went the distance for Boardman (4-0) in the win over Lake (2-1).
Feret again went 2-for-3 with a home run and double and she drove in three runs.
Lakeview 7, Niles 3: CORTLAND -- Carissa Prince went 3-for-3 with three steals, while Carissa Pringle and Lana Antonelli each hit doubles for the Bulldogs (2-0).
A four-run third inning put Lakeview in front 6-0 before Niles cut the margin in half in the fourth.
