HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL Crutchley, Hurford key W. Branch
Struthers is 3-0 and Ursuline opened the season the way it ended 2000.
BELOIT -- Senior James Crutchley scattered three hits and struck out two as West Branch blanked Southeast 4-0 in a high school baseball game Saturday.
The Warriors' Josh Hurford hit two home runs and Josh Scott hit another.
"Crutchley [1-0] gives us a chance to win by hitting the spots and not walking anyone," West Branch coach Len Grove said. "He allows our defense to play well."
The Warriors (2-1) took a 3-0 lead in the third inning. Scott led off the inning with a home run. Drew Romigh singled and with one away, Hurford hit a home run. He also hit one in the sixth inning.
"We are just looking for Hurford to hit the ball with consistency," Grove said. "As he goes, we'll go."
In the bottom of the sixth, Southeast put runners on first and third with no outs. A Pirates' batter hit a lined shot and outfielder Romigh turned quickly, chased it down for an out, then threw to second for a doubleplay.
"This is a good win for us because Southeast plays sound fundamental baseball and we had to go all out to get the win," Grove said. "We played solid team defense."

Angelo, who was relieved by Swogger in the seventh inning, posted six strikeouts. Each gave up one hit.
Justin Adams also keyed the Irish with a solo homer, single and two RBIs, while Josh Conkey and Erin Saterlee each chipped in with two singles.
