McDONALD -- Life Line Screening will offer tests to detect the risk of stroke and vascular disease April 13 at the McDonald Knights of Columbus.
The tests include an abdominal aortic aneurysm test, a carotid artery screening test and an ankle brachial index. Women can receive bone density screenings for the early detection of osteoporosis. Tests are $35 each. Call (800) 407-4557.
'Talk with a Doc'
YOUNGSTOWN -- Humility of Mary Health Partners' free "Talk with a Doc" April program features two speakers.
Dr. Kevin D. Mullen, a specialist in liver disease, will discuss new therapies in hepatitis C at 7 p.m. April 19 at St. Elizabeth Health Center.
Dr. James Martuccio Jr., an ophthalmologist, will discuss treatments for glaucoma at 7 p.m. April 25 at St. Joseph Health Center, Warren.
Yoga classes set
WARREN -- St. Joseph Health Center will offer yoga classes Mondays April 23 through June 11. "Gentle Yoga" is at 4 p.m. and "Beginning Yoga" is at 5:30 p.m. Either class costs $57. Call (877) 700-4647.
Cancer screening
LISBON -- The Mahoning Valley American Cancer Society, East Liverpool City Hospital and Salem Community Hospital will sponsor a colorectal cancer prevention and treatment program April 10 at the Columbiana County Career Center.
The event begins at 5:30 p.m. and includes a buffet dinner. Free screenings kits are available. Make reservations by Tuesday by calling (888) 227-6446.
Coping program
WARREN -- The Mahoning Valley American Cancer Society, Humility of Mary Health Partners and Forum Health will sponsor the "I Can Cope" program for cancer patients and families. The free six-class program begins at 6 p.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph Health Center. Call (330) 841-43472.
Foundation award
WARREN -- Planned Parenthood of Mahoning Valley Inc. recently received a $90,000 grant from the Raymond John Wean Foundation that will be used to move Planned Parenthood's Warren Center from 418 S. Main Ave. to 1353 E. Market St.
The grant will be also used to renovate the new building. An additional exam room will be added and hours will be extended. Planned Parenthood also has sites in Youngstown and Calcutta.
Breast cancer checks
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Encore plus Program at the YWCA in Youngstown will conduct the Mammovan from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. April 18. The program provides breast cancer screenings and helps refer Mahoning County women to low or no-cost mammograms. Transportation is available by appointment. Financial assistance is available. Sebring screenings

A new study shows that weeds are widely used in cultures that treat themselves with plants from their surroundings.
In the current issue of the Journal of Ethnopharmacology, researchers from Georgia and Michigan studied the medicinal plants of the Highland Maya in Chiapas, Mexico, and of other Native Americans.
