Long Description: LA PERICHOLE (Performing Arts Series) An Opera Bouffe Music by Jacques Offenbach, Libretto by Henry Meilhac and Ludovic Halévy Ford Theater April 14, 15 & 16 • 7:30 p.m. April 17 • 3:00 p.m. Peruvian street singers Perichole and Piquillo are too poor to get married. One day, Perichole is spotted by the viceroy, Don Andres, who is attracted to her and plans to install her in the palace as his mistress. Reluctant but starving, she consents to go and writes a farewell letter to Piquillo. The desperate Piquillo attempts suicide, but is stopped by Don Pedro, who has been instructed to find a husband for the Viceroy’s new favorite, since only married women are allowed in the palace. From here, the opera bouffe plot thickens delightfully, replete with mistaken identities, dungeons, close calls, and happy resolution—all carried along by Offenbach’s charming score that incorporates the exotic sounds of the South American setting.
