Long Description: Puts Concerto for Marimba and Orchestra Naoko Takada, marimbist Dvorak Symphony No. 8, G major NAOKA TAKADA, born in Tokyo, was only eight years old when she was first exposed to what would become her life’s passion. Takada was attending a concert with her mother during Hina Matsuri, an annual doll festival in Japan known as Girl’s Day when she saw marimbist Akiko Susuki, who became the budding musician’s first mentor. At age eleven, Takada’s musical career took off when she soloed with the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra and the Tokyo Chamber Orchestra. Not imagining a career in music, she went on to study psychology at Wasenda University in Tokyo. In her sophomore year, as an exchange student at California State University, Northridge, Takada’s interest in the marimba was rekindled and she remained at Northridge to complete a degree in music performance. Following graduation, Takada was awarded an assistantship at Ithaca College as a student of marimbist Gordon Stout. Just one year after receiving her Master’s degree from Ithaca College, Takada won first prize in the Young Concert Artists International Auditions. Soon after, Takada soloed at the Tokyo Opera City Recital Hall, Kennedy Center and the 92nd Street Y. In 2004, she embarked on a worldwide solo concert tour teaching master classes along the way in Mexico, China and across the United States. She continues to perform internationally and teach workshops. When not traveling Naoko Takada splits her time between Los Angeles and Tokyo.
