The band played and sang "Going Up the Country" by Canned Heat, "Somebody to Love" by Jefferson Airplane, "My Generation" by The Who, "Piece of My Heart" by Janis Joplin, "I Want to Take You Higher," by Sly and the Family Stone and finished with Joe Cocker's version of "With a Little Help From My Friends."

Neighbors | Zack Shively.The Boardman marching band performed a number of songs in concert formation, but they got up and moved during Harry Belafonte's "Jump in the Line." The event celebrated the band's hard work over the course of the marching season and allowed them to have a night to play all the songs they learned in the course of the season.

Participating students split into 14 teams and designed cupcakes under a Woodstock theme. The students were judged based on the taste of their cupcakes and the presentation of their full group of cupcakes. After the event, the atttendees walked over to the cafeteria to eat the cupcakes.

The Boardman High School marching band performed during their “In Concert“ event on Oct. 28.
The event had the band performing their full marching set, including drum cadences, for parents and fans of the band. The Spartan Sweethearts and Spartan Silks/Twirlers, the dance team and flag line, performed with the band as they had all season. They also had a “Cupcake Wars“ style competition where groups baked cupcakes and presented them to be judged.
“The band is so unique and special. This event is great for the kids to play the whole set in a night,“ said band director Thomas Ruggieri. He also said the “Cupcake Wars BSMB Style“ has been popular among the students and those at the event.
The band started in the “Script Ohio” formation that Ohio State’s marching band does. They played “Buckeye Battle Cry“ followed by “The Star Spangled Banner.“ Then, they sat down and opened their set with an arrangement of Aaron Copland’s “Fanfare for the Common Man.“
They began into their melodies of Van Halen and Bruno Mars, where they played multiple songs from the artists. They played some other popular songs after that, including “Sell Out“ by Less Than Jake, “Believer“ by Imagine Dragons and “Jump in the Line“ by Harry Belafonte.
The drumline followed this by playing their own set of songs that they played for the Drum Night at Boardman High School. The students in the drumline wrote and choreographed the pieces and movements with little help from Ruggieri.
The full band played two melodies from last year’s group of songs that the students enjoyed. They played “My Shot“ and “The Room Where It Happens“ from the Broadway musical Hamilton proceeded by Prince’s “Let’s Go Crazy“ and “Purple Rain.“
Members of the band came out to the floor to dance with the Spartan Sweethearts during the band’s playing of “Sh-Boom“ by The Chords.
The band and Ruggieri gave a special tribute to the seniors in band, Silks and Sweethearts. They performed “Auld Land Syne“ and Boardman’s Alma Mater before heading into their final set of songs.
Their performance culminated in their main set of songs this marching season, “Woodstock: 3 Days of Peace and Music.“ The band played a series of songs from Woodstock and had members of their band come out and sing the songs, ending with Joe Cocker’s “With a Little Help From My Friends.“
The attendees in the stands went to the cafe to eat the cupcakes from the “Cupcake Wars” after the performance. The students in the band cooked and designed the cupcakes. They split into 14 teams and made more than 600 cupcakes under the Woodstock theme that the band ended the show with. The cupcakes often had tie-dye looking designs on the frosting and were placed in the formation of a peace sign.
Ruggieri said the proceeds from the event will go toward the band’s trip in April, where they will march in Norfolk, Va. as a part of the annual Parade of Nations.
The marching band has done the “In Concert“ event for many years, at least since 1975. They have done “Cupcake Wars BSMB Style“ for the past six years.
