Jed steele is an iconic figure in California wine history and folklore. He is the man most people credit with launching the iconic Kendall Jackson Chardonnay, which is still one of America's most iconic wine brands.  Steele was the chief winemaker for KJ Chardonnay and is credited for developing the style and flavor profile that so many people loved.

Steele moved on to start his own label about a decade ago and he has succeeded in developing an impressive portfolio with several different labels. Steele's winery and many of his vineyards are located in Lake County, California. He also uses his knowledge and connections to find quality grapes from other parts of the state.

Christopher Kray, the local represenetative for the Steele wine portfolio, will serve as guest host for a local event showcasing the wines on January 29th at Avalon Golf and Country Club. The "Wine Academy" tasting starts at 7PM. Guests have the option of tasting the five wines for $25 or enjoying each wine with a special Tapas dinner course for $50.

Here's a look at the featured wines:

2013 Shooting Star Sauvignon Blanc $15

Fresh and crisp with notes of fig, melon and a hint of honey. On the palate the wine shows fresh grapefruit and tart lime with a generous, crisp acidic finish.

2013 Steele "Steele Cuvee" Chardonnay $19

Excellent depth of flavor, wonderful acidity and complex aromas. Blended from vineyards in Santa Maria, Sonoma, and Mendocino the flavor profile reflects in part each of the distinct terroirs. Lush mango, papaya and pineapple with hints of citrus, baked apples and almonds.

2011 Shooting Star Zinfandel $17

Aromas of raspberry and black fruits with butter, nutmeg and subtle cinnamon. Ripe plum and cedar tones integrate with soft but distinct tannins.

2012 Steele "Red Hills" Cabernet $20

The vineyards rest on the slope of a dormant volcano causing the grapes to struggle to thrive. The result is a Cab with incredible tannic structure integrated with dark fruits, cassis and baker's chocolate on the finish.

2012 Writers Block Petite Sirah $19

Surprisingly more approachable and pleasant than most 2012 Petite Sirahs. Rich plum and blackberry fruits with subtle vanilla, and cinnamon. The spices are well integrated and merge wonderfully with the fruit flavors.
