YSU’s Wyatt Lefker sets mark in pole vault

Youngstown State freshman Wyatt Lefker set a Penguins record in the pole vault Friday at the Harrison Dillard Twilight at Baldwin Wallace University. Lefker cleared 5.01 meters on his second attempt en route to winning the event. Macklin Rose finished as the runner-up after clearing the bar at 4.66.

Abby Jones won the high jump after clearing the bar at 1.70m on her first attempt. Chontel Fils finished third in the triple jump after recording a leap of 11.09 on her final attempt.

Freshman Zach Gehm won the discus with a throw of 51.13 on his final attempt of the afternoon. Nicolette Kreatsoulas won the hammer with a throw of 57.74.

YSU also competed Friday in the Dr. Keller Invitational at Wright State and the Marty Goldberg Gator Invitational at Allegheny College in Meadville, Pa.

Sophomore Sean Peterson was victorious in the 1500 ahead of 112 competitors with a time of 3:51:08 at Wright State. In the 3000 steeplechase, senior Alan Burns finished with the 11th fastest time overall at 9:15.14 after running in Heat 3.

Ryan Sullivan finished as the runner-up in the 1500 at Allegheny with a time of 3:57.95 at Frank B. Fuhrer Field.

Scrappers assistant GM is Curbstone speaker

Matt Thompson, Mahoning Valley Scrappers assistant general manager of sales, will be the guest speaker at Monday’s luncheon meeting of The Curbstone Coaches at the Avion Banquet Center on Western Reserve Road in Beaver Township.

The event begins at noon and the public is welcome to attend.

Cianciola named NCAC Newcomer of the Year

CLEVELAND

Denison men’s tennis garnered five All-North Coast Athletic Conference selections on Friday morning, highlighted by freshman and Canfield graduate Tim Cianciola as the NCAC Newcomer of the Year.

Vlad Rotnov, Mitchell Thai and Cianciola were named to the first team. Kevin Brown and Blake Burstein received second-team honors.

Also named to the All-NCAC first-team, Cianciola posted an overall record of 19-4, including a 16-2 mark in dual match play in the spring. Totaling a 4-0 sweep in the NCAC West Division, Cianciola is Denison’s third Newcomer of the Year in the last four years.

AP source: Lakers hire Frank Vogel as coach

A person familiar with the search says the Los Angeles Lakers have hired Frank Vogel as coach.

The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity Saturday because the hiring has not been announced. Vogel, 45, flew to Los Angeles on Thursday.

Former Arizona coach Dick Tomey dies at 80

TUCSON, Ariz.

Dick Tomey, the winningest football coach in University of Arizona history, has died at 80.

He died surrounded by family Friday night in Tucson, his family and the university said. He was diagnosed with lung cancer in December.

Tomey spent 14 years at Arizona, going 95-64 while taking the Wildcats to seven bowl games, including the Fiesta Bowl in 1993. Arizona went 12-1 in 1998 under Tomey and beat Nebraska in the Holiday Bowl to finish a program-best No. 4 in the AP poll.

Nadal loses to Tsitsipas at Madrid Open

MADRID

Rafael Nadal’s slump on clay continued with a 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 loss to ninth-ranked Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece in the semifinals of the Madrid Open on Saturday. It was the third straight semifinal elimination for Nadal, adding to his worst start to the clay swing since 2015.

Tsitsipas will try to win his third title of the year in a final against top-ranked Novak Djokovic, who defeated Dominic Thiem 7-6 (2), 7-6 (4) .

In the women’s final, Kiki Bertens beat two-time Madrid champion Simona Halep 6-4, 6-4.
