Michalojko tournament Sunday in New Castle

NEW CASTLE, PA.

The 18th annual Michael “Mickey” Michalojko Memorial Scratch Bowling Tournament is set for Sunday at Colonial Lanes in New Castle, Pa.

Some of the best bowlers in the tri-state area will compete for a $2,000 first prize.

Michalojko was the long-time proprietor of Colonial Lanes and Shenango Bowl-A-Way and one of the top bowlers in the area from the 1950s through the 1970s. He was elected to the Lawrence County Bowling Association Hall of Fame in 1973 and the Lawrence County Sports Hall of Honor in 2006.

The tournament format will be two four-game qualifying squads at 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. on Sunday. Qualifiers will compete in a finals format after the afternoon squad..

Each squad is limited to 66 bowlers. The 2018 tournament was a sell-out. The fee is $75 in advance and $85 on Sunday.

Proceeds from the tournament, sponsored by Pizza Joe’s, will go toward a scholarship fund in Michalojko’s name. To date, $27,500 in scholarship awards have been distributed, including $1,700 this year.

The public is invited to attend the tournament. Any bowlers interested in competing should call Colonial Lanes at 724-654-5000 or stop at the center to fill out an entry form. Those forms are available on a first-come, first-served basis and must be submitted with the entry fee.
