The Youngstown State women’s bowling team saw its season come to a close on Friday as it dropped a pair of matches at the Southland Bowling League Championship at USA Bowl.
Competing in their first conference tournament, the sixth-seeded Penguins lost their opening match 2-0 to third-seeded Arkansas State. YSU fell to the elimination bracket and lost 2-0 to Louisiana Tech, the seventh seed in the tournament.
“I’m extremely proud of how the ladies handled themselves today,” YSU head coach Doug Kuberski said. “They competed like true champions and did a solid job of navigating a very challenging pattern. This experience will be there for us to draw upon as we look to build heading into next season, and it will only make us stronger.”

Rachel Ellis and Emily Dietz threw their finals shots in collegiate bowling, and it was an emotional final frame with that in mind. We are certainly going to miss all they bring to the table. I want to thank them for their dedication to the program on and off the lanes. They always have a home here.”
The tournament featured mega matches where teams had to win two of three of a traditional match, a Baker match and a best-of-seven Baker games match.
Youngstown State fell 960-917 to the Red Wolves in the traditional match, and A-State fired the highest total of the morning in the Baker match in a 1,045-949 decision.
Emma Dockery’s 210 was the fourth-highest total of the morning rounds, and Nikki Mendez posted a 202. The Penguins topped out in Baker play with a 236 against the Red Wolves.
Four Penguins bowled at least 186 in the traditional match against Louisiana Tech, and Dietz led the squad with a 205. YSU lost the traditional match 988-931, and it dropped the Baker match 925-891 to be eliminated from the tournament.
