Boardman High School students were invited to create a mural for the Southern Park Mall this year.

Art teacher Alyssa Birch said that the members of the National Art Honors Society were asked to create the project.

“They originally requested that we go early in the morning, and paint onto the walls, but we came up with a solution that works for both groups,” Birch said.

She explained that students created a portable mural that they could construct at the school.

To help with the project, student Sam Larkin created eight wooden boards in the woods four class. NAHS students then painted the letters spelling out Boardman onto each one, decorating the letters with different themes from the area.

Students chose themes of downtown Youngstown, Boardman sports and even drew pictures of the steel mills.

Birch said that the students have been working for months on the project.

“It is a great opportunity for them,” She said. “Plus it is something they can really be proud of every time they go to the mall, they’ll see their art on display.”

Birch said that later this year the murals will go on display in the food court.
