Winslow to be retried on rape charges
VISTA, Calif.
Former pro football player Kellen Winslow Jr. will be retried after a jury convicted him of raping a homeless woman but failed to agree on eight other criminal charges, California prosecutors said Friday.
Assistant District Attorney Dan Owens said at a hearing in San Diego County Superior Court that five women who testified against Winslow at the first trial will be back on the witness stand at a second trial set for September.
Winslow, who played for Cleveland, Tampa Bay, New England and the New York Jets, was convicted Monday of raping a 58-year-old homeless woman and two counts of lewd conduct involving two other women.
A judge declared a mistrial on the remaining charges — including two counts of rape involving a hitchhiker and an unconscious teenage girl in 2003 — after the jury said it was hopelessly deadlocked.
Force, 70, leads NHRA Funny Car qualifying
BRISTOL, Tenn.
John Force topped Funny Car qualifying Friday night in the NHRA Thunder Valley Nationals at Bristol Dragway.
The 70-year-old Force had a 3.911-second run at 326.95 mph in a Chevrolet Camaro SS in the second session.
“We’re learning and I really thought that there would be a number of cars that would step up,” the 16-time season champion said. “Especially Jimmy Prock (Robert Hight’s crew chief) and I thought he would run an .88 or something. Our car went though, and it was really hunting down there. Tomorrow is a new day but I’m excited for my guys. It’s a good race car and I’m proud to drive it. I’m learning about it and at my age I thought I knew everything about it.”
Doug Kalitta led in Top Fuel with a 3.755 at 324.67 during the second round.
Idaho fires coach Verlin following investigation
MOSCOW, Idaho
Idaho has fired basketball coach Don Verlin after he was placed on administrative leave following a consultant’s report that found potential NCAA violations.
Idaho announced the firing Friday. Verlin was placed on administrative leave May 28. The school said the decision was made after consultation with current university president Chuck Staben and incoming president C. Scott Green.
Interim Idaho athletic director Pete Isakson said Verlin was terminated for cause.
“These are not easy conversations or decisions, but we have a direct responsibility to do what is best for the university,” Isakson said.
Consulting firm Ice Miller investigated the program and found three possible NCAA violations, one including a staff member practicing with the team. Verlin was 177-176 in 11 seasons at Idaho.
Assistant coach Zac Claus was named interim head coach and will serve in that role for the upcoming season. A search for a permanent head coach will begin next spring, the school said.
Predators swap pick to Tampa Bay for goalie
NASHVILLE, Tenn.
The Nashville Predators have acquired goaltender Connor Ingram from the Tampa Bay Lightning for their seventh-round pick in the 2021 NHL draft.
General manager David Poile announced the trade Friday.
Ingram originally was the 88th pick overall in the third round in 2016, and he spent three seasons with Kamloops in the WHL.
From Imperial, Saskatchewan, appeared in 35 games this season with the AHL’s Syracuse Crunch and the Orlando Solar Bears in the ECHL. He finished the season with Orlando where he was 8-2-0 in 13 regular season games, then he had a 1.98 goals-against average and .935 save percentage in 10 postseason games.
Ingram, 22, started the season with Syracuse, Tampa Bay’s top affiliate. He tied for the AHL lead with six shutouts, and he went 14-7-0 for Syracuse with a 2.26 goals-against average and a .922 save percentage. The 6-foot-1, 202-pound goalie has played 57 career games with Syracuse.
