Bengals waive Hall; injury sidelines Price

Cincinnati

The Cincinnati Bengals placed center and Austintown Fitch graduate Billy Price on the Active/Non-Football Injury list on Friday.

The Bengals also waived former Fitch running back Darrin Hall.

Price, who’s entering his second year out of Ohio State, started 10 games last season. He missed six games after suffering a foot injury in Week 2 against the Baltimore Ravens.

Price will continue to count against the team’s roster limit and can be activated to practice as soon as they are cleared medically.

Fitch Hall of Fame banquet set for Oct. 12

AUSTINTOWN

The Austintown Fitch Athletic Hall of Fame banquet will be Oct. 12 at 5 p.m. at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Center.

Among the inductees will be Phil Annarella, the Falcons head football coach for 12 seasons who died on June 8.

Wright State’s Hughes signs with British team

Dayton

Mark Hughes, a Ursuline and Wright State graduate, signed with the Worcester Wolves from the United Kingdom’s British Basketball League.

Hughes started all 35 games in 2018-19, and was named to the Horizon League’s All-Defensive Team.

He averaged 9.3 points per game, 2.3 assists and a career-best 4.3 rebounds last season.

Armstrong named to Wuerffel Watch List

FORT WALTON BEACH, Fla.

Syracuse senior linebacker Andrew Armstrong was named to the preseason watch list for the 2019 Wuerffel Trophy on Thursday. The Wuerffel Trophy is presented to the college football player who best combines exemplary community service with athletic and academic achievement.

Armstrong, a Cardinal Mooney graduate, was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes in high school and actively supports the Central New York chapter of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. He frequently shares his story with other diabetics and has participated in the organization’s annual One Walk to raise money for research.

Armstrong made 74 tackles in 37 games.

Semifinalists for the award will be announced on Nov. 5.

Bowden among Hornung candidates

LEXINGTON, Ky.

Kentucky athlete Lynn Bowden Jr. has been named to the 2019 preseason Paul Hornung Award Watch List, it was announced on Thursday by the Louisville Sports Commission. The award annually is given to college football’s most versatile player.

Bowden, a Warren Harding graduate, broke the school record for most receptions (67) by a sophomore in school history, surpassing Derek Abney’s 66 from 2001, in 2018. He led the Wildcats in catches, receiving yards (745) and touchdown receptions (five) and hauled in the most catches in a season since current Randall Cobb caught 84 passes in 2010.

The 2019 Hornung Award winner will be announced on March 4 at the award’s annual dinner.

Pens acquire Harvard’s Marino from Oilers

PITTSBURGH

The Pittsburgh Penguins on Friday acquired Harvard defenseman John Marino from the Edmonton Oilers for a conditional draft pick.

The Oilers will receive Pittsburgh’s 2021 sixth-round draft choice if Marino signs with the Penguins, or if the team trades his rights.

The 22-year-old Marino is unsigned. He was drafted in the sixth round by Edmonton in 2015 and played at Harvard last season, totaling three goals and 11 points in 30 games.

The native of Brockton, Mass., has seven goals and 42 points in 101 games at Harvard.
