First Friday Club of Greater Youngstown welcomes Shannen Dee Williams, Ph.D., at 11:30 a.m. Aug. 1 to Avion on the Water Banquet Center, 2177 W. Western Reserve Road, Canfield. Dr. Williams, assistant professor of history at Villanova University in Philadelphia will speak on “The Real Sister Act: Black Catholic Nuns and the Long Struggle to Desegregate U.S. Religious Life.” There will be an opportunity for questions to follow. Trumbull County Republican Party will host its third annual Ronald Reagan barbecue from 3 to 6 p.m. on Aug. 17 at Creed’s Pavilion, 2900 Anderson-Morris, Niles. D.A.R.E. Singles Group meets at 7:30 p.m. each Thursday at Disciples Christian Church, 565 Boardman-Canfield Road. Activities for the week: from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday, music at White House Fruit Farm – “Blues Berry Bash” and at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, birthday night at the church.

William Holmes McGuffey Historical Society will meet at 10 a.m. Saturday in the Kravitz Deli meeting room, 3135 Belmont Ave., Liberty. Ben Lariccia and Joe Tucciarone, authors of “Coal War in the Mahoning Valley: The Origin of Greater Youngstown’s Italians,” will speak. Member admission is $5 and $6 for nonmembers. SUPPORT GROUPS

Alzheimer Network Family Support Groups will meet at 10 a.m. today at Canfield Christian Church, 123 S. Broad St., Canfield; at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Easter Seals Adult Day Center, 299 Edwards St., Youngstown and at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Emmanuel Lutheran Education Building, 251 S. Broadway Ave., Salem. NAMI Mahoning Valley offers a Connections support group that meets the second and fourth Thursdays of each month at 6 p.m. at Alta Care, 142 Javit Court, Austintown. NAMI Mahoning Valley also offers Family Support Groups that provide information and support for family members and friends of individuals with mental illness. Family groups meet the first Thursday of each month at 11 a.m. at Girard Library, 105 E. Prospect St.; and the second Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m. at Alta Care. Someplace Safe Inc. Support Group will meet from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Howland Public Library Community Room, 9095 E. Market St., Warren. The group is open to all survivors of domestic/intimate partner violence and can attend as many or as few sessions as desire. Light refreshments will be provided.
