Machado, Spikes use hit parade to batter Scrappers

Jonatan Machado and Luis Flores combined for six hits, three RBIs and three runs scored as the State College Spikes beat the Mahoning Valley Scrappers 13-6 in New York-Penn League play on Friday night at Eastwood Field.

Machado singled twice, doubled and drove in two runs for the Spikes (13-8), who collected 15 hits and scored in each of the first three innings. State College led 9-1 after scoring five runs in the top of the third inning.

That outburst knocked out Mahoning Valley right-hander Carlos Vargas (1-1), who allowed 10 hits and nine runs — all earned — in just 2 1/3 innings.

The Spikes added three runs in the sixth and another in the ninth. All nine State College starters had at least one hit and scored at least one run.

David Vinsky singled, walked twice and scored three runs for the Spikes.

State College starter Scott Politz (1-1) allowed three hits, a walk and three earned runs in five innings.

The Scrappers (11-10) finished with eight hits, but none of their players had more than one.

Pedro Alfonseca drove in Mahoning Valley’s first run with a single in the bottom of the second inning.

George Valera hit a two-run home run — his fourth — in the third and Korey Holland delivered a two-run single in the sixth for the Scrappers.

Jonathan Lopez added an RBI single in the seventh.

The Spikes and Scrappers will are scheduled to conclude the three-game series at 7:05 p.m. today at Eastwood Field.

The current six-game homestand then resumes at 4:05 p.m. Sunday when Mahoning Valley opens a three-game series against the Williamsport Crosscutters.
