Mardi Gras Party to benefit Hospice of the Valley
Hospice of the Valley will host their 17th annual Mardi Gras Party on Feb. 9 at Mr. Anthony’s, located at 7440 South Ave. in Boardman. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. with champagne and hor d’ouvres. Featured at the event will be a silent auction, food, drinks, dancing to Ovation and DJ Bryan Ladd, a 50/50 raffle, psychic readings, Spin and Win presented by Komara Jewelers and more. Honorary chairs for the event are John and Denise York, DeBartolo Corporation and Patt and Doug Sweeney, Sweeney Chevrolet. Donation for the evening’s festivities is $100 per person. The public is invited. Sponsorship tables available. One hundred percent of the proceeds stay local to benefit Hospice of the Valley and their mission to provide comfort and compassionate care to those at the end of life as well as support for their families, doing so since 1979. ABWA to meet on Feb. 12
The Mill Creek Chapter of ABWA (American Business Women’s Association) will host its Feb. 12 meeting at Al A Cart Catering in Canfield. The meeting will begin with networking at 6 p.m. followed by dinner at 6:30 p.m. The menu for the evening includes stuffed baked pork chops, Swiss chicken, mashed potatoes, California blend vegetables, tossed salad, apple sauce, pickled beets, dessert, coffee and tea. The speaker for this meeting is Debbie Hale from Mercy Health who will speak to us about insurance issues. The public is welcome.
Kindergarten readiness stations
Kindergarten readiness stations are in every Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County library branch and feature fun activities for you and your preschool child to complete together. For the month of February, the stations focus on cognitive skills. This includes the development of memory, symbolic thought, reasoning and problem-solving. These skills support learning in all subjects. Before kindergarten, children should be able to communicate about past events and anticipate what comes next during familiar routines and experiences. They should also be able to solve everyday problems based upon past experiences. Our kindergarten readiness stations offer fun activities to build these skills. Working on these skills now will help your child be ready to learn when they get to school. Stop by any branch to visit a kindergarten readiness station and help your child build these important skills.
Fundamental research approaches for business and life
In a world of access to the depths and breadth of information unthinkable a century ago, it is more important than ever to develop some skills in research. Whether you are interested in finding out more about the news, a business’s annual revenue, or are writing a paper for school, this program can help. Some of the topics we will cover at the Poland library on Feb. 22 at 3:30 p.m. are: Google search techniques, source authority, truth tables and searching company annual reports. Decorate an ornament for the Poland library’s all-seasons tree during regular hours in February. This event is for children of all ages.
Tales and talk for 2s and 3s
Join the Poland library every Thursday in February at 10:30 a.m. for developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child (ages 2-3) become a successful reader. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Feb. 14 will be a holiday program.
Bonding with babies and books
This event, which will take place on Feb. 6, 13, 20 at 10 a.m. at the Poland library, is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months. There will be 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize.
Yoga class
The Poland library will host a yoga class in the library meeting room every Wednesday throughout February from 5-6 p.m. Pay as you attend. Class is $10 per session. This event is for adults.
V is for Valentine’s Day
Join the Poland library on Feb. 7 at 6 p.m. for a Valentine’s Day bash with stories, games, crafts and more holiday fun. This event is for children of all ages.
Blood drive
There will be a blood drive by the Mahoning Chapter of the American Red Cross at the Poland library on Feb. 8 from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. The Red Cross bus will be in parking lot accepting donations. For appointments, call 1-800-RED-CROSS (1-800-733-2767) or register online at www.RedCrossBlood.org.

This event is for children ages 2-5 who are accompanied by a caregiver. Join the Poland library on Feb. 15 at 10 a.m. for a variety of musical and movement activities that appeal to the “young and restless,” stimulate brain development and motivate language learning. Adults and children, get ready to act out stories and rhymes, sing and dance, talk and play.
Blood pressure check
Blood pressure check by Salem Area Visiting Nurse Association will take place at the Poland library on Feb. 15 from 10:15-11:15 a.m.

Read to Roxie
Relax and read to Roxie, a registered therapy dog with GO TEAM Therapy Dogs, on Feb. 19 at 6 p.m. at the Poland library. Each child will be given a 15-minute reading session while spots remain. Call 330-744-8636 and ask for the Poland library to register. This event is for grades 1-4.
Snack-n-sign
This event is for all fifth- eighth-graders. Come to the Poland library on Feb. 22 at 4 p.m. to learn sign language and about Deaf culture through fun, interactive games and activities. A snack will be provided.

Read a story at the Poland library on Feb. 26 at 10 a.m. and have fun with developmentally appropriate games and activities that you can do with your child to help them get ready for kindergarten. ASL Baby Brilliant
Come to the Poland library on Feb. 27 at 10 a.m. to learn how to use American Sign Language with your child through rhymes, songs, and stories, followed by time to play and socialize. Learn easy corresponding signs to learn and share with your little ones.
Legacy Dog Rescue hosting reverse raffle
Legacy Dog Rescue is hosting its third annual Reverse Raffle on April 6 at the Avion on the Water in Canfield. A total of 125 tickets will be sold. The cost is $65 per ticket, which includes two dinners and one chance to win the grand prize of $1,500. Doors will open at 5 p.m., with dinner at 6 p.m. and the raffle at 7 p.m. A Chinese auction, games of chance and 50/50 drawings will also be available. 4-H community open house set
A 4-H community open house will take place from 6-8 p.m. in the Greenford Ruritans Building at the Canfield Fairgrounds on Feb. 7. The open house is an opportunity to talk to adult 4-H leaders and current 4-H youth members and ask questions. Attendees will be able to find out more information about 4-H and how to join a club. Some of the more than 200 projects will be available to see and experience. These projects include more than just livestock, such as, veterinary science, clothing and textile science, communication, creative arts, photography, genealogy, writing, food and nutrition, healthy living, leadership and citizenship, money management, science, technology, engineering, math, natural resources, woodworking and more.
Incoming freshman orientation meeting
There will be an orientation meeting for all eighth-graders and their parents who reside in the Poland School District on Feb. 7 in the Poland High School auditorium at 7 p.m. Poland High School’s counselors will provide information which will assist incoming freshmen make wise decisions about their course selection. Topics to be covered will include graduation requirements, end of course exams/graduation points, course levels, curriculum choices and placement tests, post-secondary/college entrance requirements, athletic participation rules/OHSAA and extracurricular options. Fundraising event to support Celebrate Poland
The committee that plans the annual Celebrate Poland festival is sponsoring a “Breakfast, Baskets and More” event on Jan. 26 at 8 a.m. at the Poland Seminary High School cafeteria. The event concludes at noon. The breakfast includes pancakes, scrambled eggs, sausage, bacon, fruit, pastries and drinks by donation. In addition to the opportunity to bid on baskets, there is a chance to win a 50 inch Smart TV at six tickets for $5. Tickets may be purchased in advance from any committee member or by calling 330-651-2999. Tickets may also be purchased at the door. You need not be present to win. All proceeds from the breakfast will go toward funding the non-profit Celebrate Poland community event, which will take place on June 28 and 29.

Cardinal Mooney hosts 27th annual “Athletic Hall of Fame” dinner
On Feb. 17, Cardinal Mooney High School will host its 27th annual “Athletic Hall of Fame” dinner at the Lake Club, located at 1140 Paulin Road in Poland. Doors open at 6 p.m. for cocktails and hors d’oeuvres. A dinner buffet will begin at 6:45 p.m. with the induction ceremony set for 8 p.m. Tickets are $75 each, with a table of eight for $600. All proceeds go directly to the Ron Stoops Scholarship Fund, which has been established by the Stoops family to provide tuition scholarships for students who attend Cardinal Mooney. This class of inductees includes Anthony “Toner” Barone, Joe Cerni, John D’Apolito, Aieshya Dixon, Katie Duracky, Walter Fyda, Greg Iaderosa, Curtis Ingram, Danielle Kepics, Ken Kraft, Bryan Lyons, Chuck Saulino, Bill Scott, Alex Simon and Val Zajac. Gamblers Anonymous meetings
If you or someone you love has a gambling addiction, Gamblers Anonymous, the only known remedy for arresting such an illness, may be able to help. A meeting of Gamblers Anonymous will take place on Fridays at 7:30 p.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman. Another G.A. meeting will take place Sundays at 7:30 p.m. at the Christ Presbyterian Church, located at at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (Cornersburg). There is no charge for the meetings, although collections are taken up at each meeting to provide for coffee, sugar and creamer, treats and free literature. The average contribution given by members at most meetings is $2. Meetings last about 1.5 hours and are both closed meetings, or, you must have suffered from a gambling addiction to attend. The Youngstown-area G.A. groups are friendly and welcoming and established members love to see new members join the fold. They are more than happy to help suffering gamblers and are knowledgeable about how to stay clean from this disease.
Overeaters Anonymous to have local meetings
Overeaters Anonymous is offering meetings at several local locations and on a variety of days. On Saturdays at 10 a.m., there will be a meeting at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in the Church Hall, Room 2, located at 4453 Warren-Sharon Road in Vienna, Ohio.
