Adams named national winner of the 2019 Excellence in EFNEP Award
Robin Adams has been named the 2019 National Excellence in EFNEP Award winner. Adams will receive the award at a recognition celebration at the 2019 EFNEP Annual Conference in Washington, D.C. on March 12. Adams is known in Mahoning County for successfully teaching EFNEP nutrition education classes to limited resource families and her work in food security issues. She is employed by the Ohio State University Extension office in Canfield. The Excellence in EFNEP Award recognizes outstanding teaching, creativity to improve program reach and effectiveness in EFNEP programming and positive influence in the community.
Lego my library
Visit the library at 2:30 p.m. on March 2 to enjoy creating Lego designs. Legos will be provided by the library. This program is for children, ages 6 and up.
Drive-through dinner fundraiser offered on Feb. 28
Lord of Life Church, located at 550 N. Broad St. in Canfield, will offer drive-through spaghetti dinners Feb. 28 from 3-6 p.m. The menu includes spaghetti featuring the church’s special recipe, tossed salad, roll and butter and dessert. MCCTC announce new school board president and vice president
The Mahoning County Career and Technical Center announced its president and vice president for 2019-2020 at last month’s board meeting. Ronald Shives, Board President, and Michael Stanko, Vice President, were sworn in at the January meeting at the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center.
Friends of the Library Mah Jongg fundraiser
The Friends of the Library- Canfield Committee will host a Mah Jongg Tournament fundraiser on March 19 from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at A La Cart Catering in Canfield. The event begins with brunch and raffle ticket sales before tourney play. It closes with sweets and the announcement of game and raffle winners. The top three players receive cash prizes. The raffle promises many interesting and delightful items. Make plans now with your foursome to attend, registration is requested by March 1. Tickets are $25 per person. Parties of less than four will be combined when possible. For registration and information, contact the development office at 330-740-6086. Proceeds of the event are used to benefit the library. Friends of the Library fundraisers help make possible popular programs like the Children’s Summer Reading Program. The Friends of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County is a 501c3 nonprofit county-wide organization whose sole purpose is to support and advocate for the public library. The Friends Canfield Committee welcomes new members. It meets in the Canfield library at 1:30 p.m. on the third Wednesday of the month, January through June and September through October. Retired teachers to meet on March 13
The Mahoning Retired Teachers Association will meet on March 13 at Drake’s Landing Banquet Center, located at 2177 W. Western Reserve Road in Canfield. The social hour will begin at 11 a.m. with lunch at 11:45 a.m., followed by the meeting and program. Susan Harris will preside. Sara Churchill, Digital Services Librarian from the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County, will discuss library online services. The community service project will be donations to Mahoning County library’s summer literacy program. Grilled chicken salad or the buffet, which will feature parmesan crusted cod and pasta with meatballs, will be served. All area educators are invited to attend. Teacher and substitute teacher job fair
The Mahoning County Educational Service Center (MCESC) is hosting its annual teacher recruiting event on March 4 from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. The teacher job fair will take place in the Joyce Brooks Center, located at the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center. All recent and upcoming spring graduates in education, credentialed teachers, substitute teachers and substitute teacher candidates can meet with district administrators and substitute teacher recruiters to learn about teaching opportunities. Gamblers Anonymous offers meetings
If you or someone you love has a gambling addiction, Gamblers Anonymous may be able to help. A meeting of Gamblers Anonymous will take place on Fridays at 7:30 p.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman. Another G.A. meeting will take place on Sundays at 7:30 p.m. at the Christ Presbyterian Church, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (Cornersburg). There is no charge for the meetings, although collections are taken up at each meeting to provide for coffee, sugar and creamer, treats and free literature. The average contribution given by members at most meetings is $2. Meetings last about one-and-a-half hours and are both closed meetings, or, you must have suffered from a gambling addiction to attend. The Youngstown-area G.A. groups are friendly and welcoming and established members love to see new members join the fold. They are more than happy to help suffering gamblers and are knowledgeable about how to stay clean from this dreadful disease.
Fr. George M. Smiga leads event at Ursuline Education & Wellness Center
The Ursuline Education & Wellness Center will welcome Fr. George M. Smiga for an evening exploring, defining and re-interpreting the Parables of Jesus. He’ll discuss the parables of the 100 Sheep, the Pharisee and the Tax Collector, and the Prodigal Son on March 19 from 7-8:30 p.m. There is no cost to attend but freewill offerings will be accepted. eBird for Beginners event offered
Audubon Society/Mahoning Valley invites the public to “eBird for Beginners” at 7 p.m. on Feb. 26 at the Canfield library. Make your birding count by learning the basics of using eBird. Launched in 2002 as a citizen science project of the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, eBird has revolutionized the way the birding community reports and accesses information about birds. Learn how to enter data, make and find hotspots, and search for the species you need for your life list. The data entered is used by scientists to study bird migration, abundance and distribution. Using eBird, you can see checklists from birders around the country, from other countries and even what the local Audubon president saw on his last visit to the Mill Creek MetroParks Sanctuary.
NSS Life plans annual meeting
The National Slovak Society (NSS Life) local assembly 731 will host its annual meeting at 1 p.m. on March 2 at the Boardman library, located at 7680 Glenwood Ave. in Boardman. Election of officers will take place during this meeting. Members are asked to bring ideas and details to help plan assembly fraternal activities for 2019. Youth members are invited to attend and offer input about youth activities. They will also review activities sponsored by the NSS home office. Lunch will be served. Volunteers needed for fine arts show
A juried fine arts show is being planned for August in Canfield and organizers are looking for additional help. Arts on the Commons is planned for Aug. 3-10. The committee is searching for enthusiastic, organized individuals, whether or not they have a background in fine arts. Arts on the Commons will be soliciting nationally for entrants for the show. Dr. Lou Zona, director of the Butler Institute of American Art, has agreed to be the juror and Nils Johnson has pledged the initial funds for prizes through the Johnson Foundation. Golf classic to benefit American Cancer Society
The annual Pink Ribbon Golf Classic will take place at Avalon Lakes Golf and Country Club on July 15. All proceeds from this event will go directly to the American Cancer Society. Kindergarten readiness stations
Kindergarten readiness stations are in every Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County library branch and feature fun activities for you and your preschool child to complete together. For the month of February, the stations focus on cognitive skills. This includes the development of memory, symbolic thought, reasoning and problem-solving. These skills support learning in all subjects. Before kindergarten, children should be able to communicate about past events and anticipate what comes next during familiar routines and experiences. They should also be able to solve everyday problems based upon past experiences. Our kindergarten readiness stations offer fun activities to build these skills. Working on these skills now will help your child be ready to learn when they get to school. Stop by any branch to visit a kindergarten readiness station and help your child build these important skills.
Tales and talk for 2s and 3s
Join the Canfield library every Thursday in February at 10 a.m. for developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child (ages 2-3) become a successful reader. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
Bonding with babies and books
This event, which will take place every Thursday in February at 10 a.m. at the Canfield library, is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months. There will be 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize.
Gotta Move story time
This event is for children ages 2-5 who are accompanied by a caregiver. Join the Canfield library every Wednesday in February at 10 a.m. for a variety of musical and movement activities that appeal to the “young and restless,” stimulate brain development and motivate language learning. Adults and children, get ready to act out stories and rhymes, sing and dance, talk and play.
Chair yoga
The Canfield library will have a chair yoga class every Friday throughout February at 10 a.m. Pay as you attend. Class is $10 per session. Dress comfortably. This event is for adults.
Mah-Jongg Mondays
Practice your new skill to rattle the tiles and join the fun every Monday in February from 1-3 p.m. at the Canfield library. Bring your own Mah-Jongg set or share with a friend. Mah-Jongg sets not provided. This event is for adults.

Canfield Schools art fair
Enjoy art work by students from the Canfield Schools at this art show running from Feb. 21-24 during regular library hours. A reception will take place on Feb. 21 from 6-8 p.m. Light refreshments will be served. This event is open to the public.
Off the shelves
At this monthly book club at the Canfield library on Feb. 26 at 6:30 p.m., a lively discussion will occur of titles chosen ‘off the shelves’ of the Canfield library’s book club room. For February, the chosen book is ‘Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI” by David Grann. A morning session will take place on Feb. 28 at 11 a.m. You may attend one or come to both. This event is for adults. The book for March will be “Leaving Time” by Jodi Picoult.
Learn to line dance
Line dancing is a fun, exciting activity to dance your way to good health. Line dances are easy to learn, mainly because the steps are straightforward, and you do not have to coordinate your movements with a partner. Line dances also involve repeating series of steps, so if you get lost, can easily catch up with the rest of the class. This class at the Canfield library on Feb. 27 at 6:30 p.m. will combine low, moderate and high energy line dance routines. For adults and teens.
Sit ‘n stitch
Sit and stitch with others at the Canfield library on Feb. 27 at 11 a.m. Share ideas and skills while making new friends. Bring your UFOs (unfinished objects): quilting, appliqu , knitting, or crochet projects, and supplies. This is not an instructor-led activity. This event if for adults.

Legacy Dog Rescue hosting reverse raffle
Legacy Dog Rescue is hosting its third annual Reverse Raffle on April 6 at the Avion on the Water in Canfield. A total of 125 tickets will be sold. The cost is $65 per ticket, which includes two dinners and one chance to win the grand prize of $1,500. Doors will open at 5 p.m., with dinner at 6 p.m. and the raffle at 7 p.m. A Chinese auction, games of chance and 50/50 drawings will also be available.
