Boardman High School received a special honor during its annual winter pep rally on Jan. 25.
Lee Schwebel, Vice President of Schwebel Baking Company, visited the school and presented the Boardman marching band with a $3,000 check.
“Over 400 schools entered our school spirit competition, and the Boardman band came out on top,” Schwebel said.
According to Amy Radinovic, from Boardman Communications, the school received more than 3,100 votes, which got them the grand prize in the competition.
The check presentation was preceded by an entertaining display by the Schwebel’s mascot Toasti.
Toasti danced to a classic jingle from a Schwebel’s commercial written more than 30 years ago.
Boardman Band Director Tom Ruggeri did a jazz style arraignment of the song that was performed by the band.
“We are very grateful for them to come out here,” Radinovic said. “And proud of the band for all the hard work they do.”
Along with the check presentation, Boardman celebrated their winter academic and sports teams during the pep rally.
Students competed against each other, and teachers, during a dodgeball game.
The school also presented the Sweet Hearts Court at the dance.
“We love the pep rally’s because they are a great way to get school spirit up,” Radinovic said.
The Boardman band, directed by Ruggeri, performed live music throughout the pep rally.
