YSU baseball team falls to Mississippi State

STARKVILLE, MISS.

The Youngstown State baseball team led No. 9 Mississippi State heading into the bottom of the sixth, but ultimately fell 14-3 Friday in the opener of a three-game series at Dudy Noble Field.

Mississippi State tied the game with three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning before pulling away with an 11-run eighth. The Bulldogs outhit the Penguins 14-5, and recorded 13 of those hits over its final three at-bats.

In his first game as a Penguin, senior first baseman Trevor Wiersma went 2-for-4 with a single and a two-run home run while driving in all three YSU runs. Web Charles doubled in the contest while Cameron Murray and Jeff Wehler each singled.

The Penguins and Bulldogs will continue their series with a doubleheader at 1 p.m. today.

Zallow among YSU winners at Akron

Members of the YSU men’s and women’s track and field team were in action on Friday as they competed in the Akron Zips Invitational from the Stile Athletics Field House.

Chad Zallow, Pierlus Stewart, Jaliyah Elliott, Brendon Lucas, Suerethia Henderson, Kaitlyn Merwin, and Ashleigh Rowley won events as the rest of the Penguins had one final tuneup before next weekend’s Horizon League Championship at the WATTS.

Zallow won the 60m hurdles with a time of 7.72 seconds, while Collin Harden finished second with a time of 8.00 seconds. Elliott won the 60m dash with a time of 7.39 seconds. Stewart won the 400m with a time of 49.48 seconds.

Lucas won the 200m dash with a time of 21.93 seconds while, Collin Harden, Josh Beaumont, and Jamynk Jackson were right behind him in second, third and fourth respectively. Harden and Beaumont finished with personal-best times of 22.02 seconds and 22.12 seconds, while Jackson came in with a time of 22.261.

Suerethia Henderson won the 200m with a time of 24.26 seconds. Kaitlyn Merwin won the shot put with a personal-best throw of 15.26m. Ashleigh Rowley won the 3,000m with a personal-best time of 10:16.53.

YSU men’s tennis team dominates Toledo

The YSU men’s tennis team earned an impressive 6-1 win over Toledo on Friday at the Western Reserve Racquet Club. It was the Penguins’ first dual win over the Rockets since 1998.

The Penguins (3-3) rallied to earn victories in two of the three doubles matches. At No. 2 doubles, Luke Purser and Vasilis Vardakis battled for a 7-5 win over Tyler Gargas and Thawin Suksathaporn. Purser and Vardakis trailed 5-4 before winning the final three points of the match. At No. 3, Yossi Dahan and Pol Virgili Blanco trailed 4-3 before scoring the final three points in a 6-4 victory over Juan Carranza and Cole Shoults.

In singles play, Dahan was the first two clinch picking up a strong 6-3, 6-3 victory over Gargas at No. 5. The Rockets picked up a win at No. 3 singles before YSU put the match out of reach.

Purser claimed a 6-2, 6-3 win over Omar Espinoza at No. 4, Garretto clinched the match with a 7-6, 6-2 victory over Danilo Vukotic at No. 2. Erik Gran earned a 6-4, 3-6, 10-4 win over Carranza at No. 6 and to close out the match, Danylo Veremeichuk posted a 7-5, 7-6 (2) win over Vitosevic.

Swimmers compete in HL Championships

Aida Jurinovics led the YSU swimming and diving team in the evening session with a seventh-place finish in the 400 IM while Casey Prentice posted a school-record time in the 100-yard butterfly on the third day of the Horizon League Championships at the IUPUI Natatorium.

Jurinovics clocked a time of 4:30.57 to finish seventh in the 400 IM. In the prelims, she swam a time of 4:30.34.

In the prelims of the 100-yard butterfly, Prentice set the school mark at 56.62 seconds before having an even better performance in the conoslation final with a swim of 56.18 seconds. She finished 12th in the event.
