TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) — Keepers at a zoo in Ohio are welcoming a new polar cub, but they haven't been able to get close enough during the last two months to determine whether the cub is a he or a she.

The cub is the eighth born at the Toledo Zoo since 2006.

The zoo says that its keepers have been monitoring the mother and cub through cameras in the denning area since the birth on Dec. 9.

The curator of mammals tells The Blade that they expect to perform an exam on the cub in about a month when the mother is ready to come out.

The zoo hopes to have the new cub on display sometime in the spring.
