1862: Confederate forces win victories against the Union at the Second Battle of Bull Run in Manassas, Va., and the Battle of Richmond in Kentucky.

1945: U.S. Gen. Douglas MacArthur arrives in Japan to set up Allied occupation headquarters.

1963: The “Hot Line” communications link between Washington and Moscow goes into operation.

1967: The Senate confirms the appointment of Thurgood Marshall as the first black justice on the U.S. Supreme Court.

1983:Guion S. Bluford Jr. becomes the first black American astronaut to travel in space as he blasts off aboard the Challenger.

1986: Soviet authorities arrest Nicholas Daniloff, a correspondent for U.S. News and World Report, as a spy a week after American officials arrested Gennadiy Zakharov, a Soviet employee of the United Nations, on espionage charges in New York. (Both men were later released.)

1997: Americans receive word of the car crash in Paris that claimed the lives of Princess Diana, her boyfriend, Dodi Fayed, and their driver, Henri Paul.

2005: A day after Hurricane Katrina hit, floods cover 80 percent of New Orleans, looting continues to spread and rescuers in helicopters and boats pick up hundreds of stranded people.

Seven Warren youths and two from Southington are released to their parents after police caught the boys heckling two elderly women who live alone in a Brookfield farmhouse. Deputies say the women have been harassed for years by youths who call them witches.

1944: The 98th annual Canfield Fair will be a five-day event, the longest in the history of the organization.

Superintendent of Schools Paul C. Bunn appeals for parents to see to it that their children return to school, especially the older children who have been working over the summer but have not finished high school.
