The Canfield library hosted its weekly Read and Make event on Aug. 14.

Librarian Nikki Puhalla organized the event for children ages 3-5.

“We alternate this event with our Gotta Move event, but both are pretty popular,” Puhalla said.

She explained that the event is organized to create an early interest in books and reading.

“We want to facilitate literacy skills at an early age,” Puhalla said.

She said that each event has a different theme, and that she chose monsters for this week.

Puhalla read books like “Never Touch a Monster” and “Monsters Love Colors” to the children gathered at the event.

Along with stories, children sang songs and played games during the event.

Puhalla hid paper cookies around the room for children to find to “feed” cookie monster.

At the end of the event children and their parents worked to create their own paper monster, using different cut outs of shapes.

“It’s just a fun easy way to get out of the house and come spend some time at the library,” Puhalla said.

Each parent also went home with a number of literacy tips on how to help their child continue to grow the skills outside of the class.
