The 2019 Mahoning County 4-H Royal Court announced

The 2019 4-H King and Queen will be chosen from 11 court members at the Canfield Fair on Aug. 29 at 2 p.m. at the main concourse stage across from the Canfield Fair Office. The 2019 4-H Royal Court are Karlee Banks, Jennel Benson, Alaina Courtwright, Sarah DeLucia, Emily Fagert, Cheyenne Heffner, Nataley Kemmer, Zachary Kemmer, Natalia Kresic, Marcus Moliterno and James Moore.

TQGIBT previews August meeting

The August meeting of TQGIBT – That Quilt Group I Belong To – will take place on Aug. 20 at the Rotary Building at Fair Park in Canfield. Sandy Lord from the Gallery in Mercer, Pa. is the group’s featured guest. In addition to offering patterns and fabrics, Lord will show lots of panels and possible ways to use them in quilt projects. TQGIBT works to develop and promote quilting in our community. Philanthropic projects benefit Hospice House and Akron Children’s Hospital, among others. Meetings are offered monthly at Fair Park in Canfield on the third Tuesday of each month, with some exceptions, and are open to all quilters in the Mahoning Valley, at all skill levels. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., with the meeting commencing at 7 p.m. For information on membership, consider joining us at a monthly meeting.

Friendly Squares to dance at Canfield Fair

The Niles Friendly Squares will be performing square dance demonstrations at the Canfield Fair on Aug. 29 from 7-8 p.m. on the stage located in front of the International Building. A new year of weekly square dance lessons will begin Sept. 10 from 7-9 p.m. The Tuesday evening sessions will run through April 14, 2020. There is a nominal fee of $6 per person per lesson. Mahoning Valley ABWA to host founders day event

The Mahoning Valley Network Council of ABWA (American Business Women’s Association) is hosting a founders day event on Sept. 22. This women’s organization was founded 70 years ago to help women be empowered in the workplace. Jane Turzillo, author of “Wicked Women of Northeastern Ohio” will be the day’s speaker. The doors will open at 12:30 p.m. and the meal will be served at 1 p.m. The menu includes roast pork, stuffed chicken breasts, stuffed shells, mashed potatoes, green beans, tossed salad and cherries in the snow for dessert. Spaghetti dinner event

Lord of Life Church, located at 550 N. Broad Street in Canfield, will offer drive-through spaghetti dinners on Aug. 22 from 3-6 p.m. The menu includes spaghetti featuring the church’s famous meat sauce, tossed salad, roll and butter and dessert. The cost is $8 per dinner (cash only), and proceeds will help with ministry expenses. Pull up to the back door for service. Call the church office at 330-533-3531 with questions.

Holiday closing

All libraries in the PLYMC system will be closed Labor Day weekend on Sept. 1 and 2.

Off the shelves

Attend the Canfield library’s monthly book club for a lively discussion of titles chosen “Off the Shelves” of the library’s book club room. Come and join the fun with these upcoming reads, at either our morning or evening session, or come to both.. This event is for adults. On Sept. 24 at 6:30 p.m. and Sept. 26 at 11 a.m., they will discuss “Where the Crawdads Sing” by Delia Owens. October’s book will be “Into the Beautiful North” by Luis Alberto Urrea, the library’s NEA Big Read selection. The NEA Big Read is an initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with Arts Midwest.

Bonding with babies and books

Caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months can participate in 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize at the Canfield library every Thursday in September at 10 a.m. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Join the Canfield library every Tuesday in September at 10 a.m. for developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child (ages 2-3) become a successful reader. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

All about unicorns

Join the Canfield library on Sept. 21 at 11 a.m. for stories, activities, crafts and a snack as they celebrate everything that is wonderful about unicorns. This event is for children of all ages.

Celebrate curiosity day with Curious George

Children are invited to this special celebration of everyone’s favorite mischievous monkey, Curious George, at the Canfield library on Sept. 14 at 11 a.m. Join them for activities, games and a craft as they honor a children’s book icon. This event is for children of all ages.

Monday Night Writers meeting scheduled for Aug. 19

The next meeting of Monday Night Writers will be Aug. 19 from 6-8 p.m. in the small meeting room at the Canfield branch of the Public Library of Youngstown & Mahoning County, located 43 W. Main Street in Canfield. Area writers, both published and unpublished, are invited to attend. Led by professional writer Nancy Christie, author of “Traveling Left of Center and Other Stories,” “The Gifts of Change” and “Rut-Busting Book for Writers,” the two-hour sessions offer an opportunity for members to get group feedback on ‘works-in-progress.’ For more information, contact Nancy Christie at nancy@nancychristie.com.

Camp Stambaugh 100th anniversary celebration

The Camp Stambaugh 100th Anniversary Committee invites the public to come on out on Sept. 21 from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. Although the camp is located at 3712 Leffingwell Road in Canfield, parking will be at Gate 12 (on Leffingwell Road, east of State Route 46S) at the Canfield fairgrounds. Attendees will be shuttled to the camp and back. Handicap accessibility is being provided. A $20 donation is required for anyone 7-years-old and older (6 and under are welcome). Food vendors are available all-day selling refreshments as well as a Trading Post on-site. For the Scouts, Sept. 21 will begin early that morning at the Canfield Fair Grounds where the Scouts will camp overnight, and at 7 a.m. will begin parading east on Leffingwell Road from Gate 13 to Camp Stambaugh. After arriving at Camp Stambaugh, a new gateway dedication will take place at 8:30 a.m. and at 9 a.m. the opening ceremony will take place. Shuttles will begin running immediately after the parade arrives at the camp. The activities will end at 5:00 pm as all Scouts will head back to the Canfield Fair Grounds for dinner and beginning at 8:00 pm a show and closing ceremony at the Canfield Fair Grandstand. Weekly square dance lessons to begin on Sept. 10

The Niles Friendly Squares, a local square dance group dedicated to keeping alive the uniquely American art form of square dancing, will begin a new year of weekly square dance lessons. The introductory session will be Sept. 10 from 7-9 p.m. Each session builds upon the previous session and will include learning steps along with plenty of review and practice each week to help attendees master the moves. The sessions are designed to cover all the steps in the Basic Square Dance Program. Gene Hammond will be the instructor. The Tuesday evening sessions will run through April 14, 2020. There is a fee of $6 per lesson. The Friendly Squares will also be performing square dance demonstrations at the Canfield Fair on Aug. 29 from 7-8 p.m. on the stage located in front of the International Building.

Hopewell Theatre hopes to raise funds with fun

Hopewell Theatre’s 2019–2020 season kickoff “Fun” Raiser, an evening of food, fun, and prizes, will take place on Aug. 25 from 6-9 p.m. at A La Cart Catering, 429 Lisbon Street in Canfield. Tickets cost $30 and include a full dinner buffet, dessert, cash wine bar, entertainment and silent auction prizes. Local favorites Glenn Stevens and Regina Reynolds will emcee a terrific entertainment lineup - Just Friends Community Chorus will perform favorite hits of the 1950s, Tom Gent and Maureen Gorman Stenglein will sing classic show tunes, and stand-up comedian Jenna Cintavey and improvisational comedy troupe The Dinner Theatre Rejects will bring the laughs. Finding records in FamilySearch.org

FamilySearch is an incredible research tool, with records from all U.S. states and many countries around the world. Use of this resource requires free registration, whereby each researcher sets up their own account. FamilySearch has a wiki that serves as on online genealogy encyclopedia, offering articles and audiovisual tutorials. Did you know that this resource provides free death certificates for Ohio deaths occurring 1908-1953? On Aug. 20 at 6:30 p.m. at the Canfield library, Tim Seman will demonstrate best practices for using this amazing database, including how to set-up your free account. Local church offers event on Sept. 20 and 21

Lord of Life Lutheran Church, located at 550 N. Broad St. in Canfield, will host a Treasure in a Trunk event on Sept. 20 from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. and on Sept. 21 from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. Those looking to participate through selling their items should call Ruth Allen at 330-550-3022. When people hear the word “viking,” very specific images come to mind. When these diverse groups of people went a-viking (adventuring) there was much more involved than horned helmets, long beards and pillaging. Line dancing is a fun, exciting way to dance your way to good health. This class, which will take place on Aug. 29 at 6:30 p.m. at the Canfield library, will combine low, moderate and high energy line dance routines and will help you burn calories at the same time. Overeaters Anonymous is offering meetings at several local locations and on a variety of days. Join the Canfield library on Aug. 24 at 2:30 p.m. for a Saturday Movie Matinee. Bring your own snacks and drinks to enjoy during the movie. Children age 7 years and younger must be with an adult.

Gamblers Anonymous Meetings

If you or someone you love has a gambling addiction, Gamblers Anonymous may be able to help. Gamblers Anonymous meetings will take place on Fridays at 7:30 p.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman. Another G.A. meeting is offered on Sundays at 7:30 p.m. at the Christ Presbyterian Church, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (Cornersburg). There is no charge for the meetings, although collections are taken up at each meeting to provide for coffee, sugar and creamer, treats and free literature. The average contribution given by members at most meetings is $2. Meetings last about one-and-a-half hours and are both closed meetings, or, you must have suffered from a gambling addiction to attend.

Ursuline Education and Wellness Center announces guided labyrinth walks

The Ursuline Education and Wellness Center, located at 4280 Shields Road, recently began its 2019 Guided Labyrinth Walk season. This year’s themes celebrate aspects of compassion, a virtue central to the ministry of St. Angela Merici, who founded the Ursuline order in 1535. All persons of faith are invited to participate in these free, weather-permitting events. Walks generally take 20-30 minutes. The themes by date are Sept. 12 at 6:30 p.m. - “Knowledge, recognition and action” and Oct. 13 at 2 p.m. - “Love your enemies.” A presentation on the history of labyrinths precedes this walk. The labyrinth is open year-round from dawn to dusk for all persons of faith. There is no cost to use the labyrinth, which is accessible for different physical abilities and offers ample parking. Printed guides are provided at the labyrinth’s entrance giving suggestions for following the path, but there is no right or wrong way to experience the sacred walk.
