Poland Historical Society to meet

The Poland Historical Society April business meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m. on April 16, at the Little Red Schoolhouse, located at 4515 Center Road. At 7:30 p.m., Ginny Meloy will present a program titled, “The Centennial Garden - A Garden of Dreams” and Cathy Lind will speak about The Poland Village Gardeners Garden Club and their current activities.

Mahoning County 4-H dinner and auction set for April 13

The third annual Mahoning County 4-H Endowment Dinner and Auction will take place on April 13 at Mr. Anthony’s Banquet Center, located at 7440 South Ave. in Boardman. A silent auction will begin at 5 p.m., with dinner starting at 6 p.m., and a live auction to follow with Auctioneer George Roman. Auction items range from gift baskets to top-quality firearms to 2019 Ohio State University football tickets and so much more. More than 150 items were donated by area businesses, individuals and 4-H clubs. Proceeds from this auction will benefit the Mahoning County 4-H Endowment Fund. The money is used to send youth to state and national camps, to train volunteers, for educational supplies and to promote 4-H in Mahoning County.Tickets are $30. Historical society to host day trip

The Poland Historical Society will host a day trip to Pittsburgh on Sept. 18. The itinerary begins when the bus leaves from the Poland Methodist Church, located at 1940 Boardman-Poland Road, at 8:30 a.m., arriving in Pittsburgh at 10 a.m. and includes a visit to the Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Garden, lunch at the Schenley Park Caf , followed by a tour of the Frick Art and Historical Center and the Clayton Mansion. The bus will leave Pittsburgh at 5 p.m. for the return trip to Poland. The cost of this fundraiser bus trip is $115 and includes the bus, admissions and lunch. Registration for the trip is due by Aug. 12, but early registration is recommended. Registration forms are available through the Poland Historical Society or can be emailed. Make check payable to the Poland Historical Society and mail to P.O. Box 5052, Poland, OH 44514. Include name, address, phone number and email. Holy Family to host internet safety meeting

Holy Family School will host a free online/internet safety parent meeting at 7 p.m. on April 16, at the Holy Family Parish Center, located at 2729 Center Road. Learn how to protect your child from internet dangers and the legal consequences of internet activity with presenter Jennifer Varley Gray, MS.

Holy Family seniors to meet on April 15

The Holy Family Seniors Group will meet on April 15 at 11:30 a.m. at Holy Family Parish Hall, located at 2729 Center Road in Poland. Lunch is $4 per member and will be served at noon, followed by Bingo and card games. Guest speakers from Higgins-Reardon Funeral Home, Hillary Madeline, Licensed Funeral Director and Prearrangement Specialist, and Sister Pat Fessler, HM, Grief Support Specialist, will speak to the group about the benefits of prearranged funerals. Annual $10 dues were collected in March and can be paid at the April meeting if missed in March. New members are welcome to join at this time. Treasures of the Trunk fundraiser to be June 8

The Poland Lions are hosting their fifth annual Treasures of the Trunk Sale on June 8. The event takes place from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. in Poland Seminary High School’s stadium parking lot, located at State Route 170 and Dobbins Road. Vendors are being sought for this one day sale. Crafters, home goods, furniture, toys, specialty items and garage sale items are welcome. There is limit of 100 spaces. Cost per space is $15 until May 30. Spaces increase to $20 after May 30. Scout Troop 22 breakfast

St. Christine Scout Troop 22 is hosting a pancake breakfast on April 14 at the St. Christine Parish Center, located at 3165 S. Schenley Ave. in Youngstown, from 7:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. This pancake breakfast benefits Scout Troop 22 for summer camp/activities and other year-round program costs. The breakfast includes all-you-can-eat pancakes with a variety of fruit toppings, sausage, scrambled eggs, milk, orange juice and coffee, and costs $7 per person, children 6 and under free. Tickets can be purchased at the door and carry out is available.

Trim a tree

Decorate an ornament for the Poland library’s all-seasons trees during library hours for the month of April. This program is for children of all ages.

Spring getaway bus trip fundraiser

There will be a spring getaway bus trip fundraiser sponsored by the Pink Ribbon Golf Classic Committee with proceeds given to the American Cancer Society to The Rivers in Pittsburgh on May 11. The cost is $30 per person, $10 play and $5 food coupon from the casino. There is no guarantee the casino will pay these exact perks. The bus will leave Fab Limo, at 3681 Connecticut Avenue in Austintown, at 9 a.m. and will leave from The Rivers at 5 p.m. and arrive back at Fab Limo by 6:30 p.m. The deadline for reservations is May 9. Money is not refundable but the ticket can be transferred to another person. A valid photo ID is required. TeenXTreme blackout poetry contest

April is National Poetry Month, so indulge in some ‘creative destruction’ and express your inner poet during Poland library hours. Create a poem by eliminating - blacking out - the words you don’t want from newspaper and magazine articles (or book pages) which are provided. Three winners will be chosen from entries throughout the county and awarded cash prizes. Contact a librarian for details. This program is for teens in grades seven through 12.

Kindergarten readiness stations

The library’s kindergarten readiness stations are in every library branch and feature fun activities for you and your preschool child to complete together. For the month of April, stations feature preschool board games. Playing games is an easy and fun way to spend time together and they are also rich in learning opportunities. Board games can teach important social skills, such as communicating verbally, sharing, waiting, taking turns and enjoying interaction with others. These skills are part of the social emotional domain of early learning. Stop by the Poland branch to visit a kindergarten readiness station, play a game and help your child build these important skills.

Friends of PLYMC yoga

Join the Friends of PLYMC for yoga class at 5 p.m. every Wednesday in April at the Poland library. Class is $10 per session and attendees can pay as they attend. Attendees should dress comfortably. This program is for adults.

Tales and Talk for 2s and 3s

Visit the Poland library at 10:30 a.m. every Thursday in April for developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child (ages 2-3) become a successful reader.

Poetry for people who hate poetry

Ohio Poet Laureate, Case Western Reserve lecturer and author Dave Lucas will explore poetry for those who hate it, love it and everything in between at 3 p.m. on April 13 at the Poland library. Visit the library for a special reading for National Poetry Month.

Social Security speaker

April is National Social Security Month. Visit the Poland library at 12 p.m. on April 15, to learn about Social Security from Public Affairs Specialist Robert Fenn of the SSA. This informational session will touch on programs, benefits and services. This program is for adults.

Read to Roxie

Relax and read to Roxie, a registered therapy dog with Go Team Therapy Dogs at 6 p.m. on April 16 at the Poland library. Each child will be given a 15-minute reading session while spots remain. Call 330-744-8636 and ask for the Poland library to register. This program is for children in grades one through four.

Bonding with babies and books

Visit the Poland library at 10 a.m. on April 17, for 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize. This event is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months.

Conversational French II

An intermediate level of conversational French class will take place at 1 p.m. on April 17 at the Poland library, for those with some background in the language or those that attended Beginning Conversational French at the library. This class has an emphasis on speaking French to ask for help and directions, shopping and sight-seeing, meeting people and making small talk or to simply brush-up on your skills. This program is for adults.

Gotta move story time

Visit the Poland library at 10 a.m. on April 19, for a variety of musical and movement activities that appeal to the young and restless, stimulate brain development and motivate language learning. Adults and kids may act out stories and rhymes, sing and dance, talk and play. This event is for children ages 2-5 who are accompanied by a caregiver.

Blood pressure screening

Salem Area Visiting Nurse Association will host a blood pressure screening at the Poland library from 10:15-11:15 a.m. on April 19.

ASL Baby Brilliant

Learn how to use American Sign Language with your child through rhymes, songs and stories at 10 a.m. on April 24 at the Poland library, followed by time to play and socialize. Learn easy corresponding signs to share with your little ones.

More than a book club

Attendees are invited to gather together to discuss the stories and information they are currently reading and researching at 6 p.m. on April 24 at the Poland library. Whether you listen to audiobooks, read novels, read the newspaper or research online, share your sources and learn about others. This program is for adults.

Microsoft Word class 1

Visit the Poland library to learn the basic skills of Microsoft Word at 3 p.m. on April 25. This beginner’s class will cover the Word menus and functions like cut/copy/paste, font, save and print. Some basic computer skills are required. This class will soon be followed by Microsoft Word class 2 and class 3. Register online via the library events calendar or call 330-744-8636. This program is for adults.

Snack-n-sign

All fifth- through eighth-graders may visit the Poland library at 4 p.m. on April 26, to learn sign language and about deaf culture through fun, interactive games and activities. A snack will be provided.

Get connected with digital media

Learn how to download free eBooks, audiobooks, movies, TV shows, music, complete issues of magazines and more to your computer and mobile devices at 6 p.m. on April 29. Registration is required and may be made by calling 330-744-8636 and asking for the Poland library.

Playtime at your library

Visit the Poland library at 10 a.m. on April 30, to read a story and have fun with developmentally appropriate games and activities that you can do with your child to help him or her get ready for kindergarten. Activities will vary at each program. This program is for children ages 2-6.

Blood drive

There will be a blood drive by the Mahoning Chapter of the American Red Cross at the Poland library on April 30 from 1:30-6:30 p.m. (Red Cross bus will be in parking lot accepting donations). For appointments, call 1-800-RED-CROSS (1-800-733-2767) or register online at www.RedCrossBlood.org.

Local church hosts spaghetti dinner event

St. Angela Merici, located at 397 South Jackson Street in Youngstown, will host its eighth annual spaghetti dinner and Chinese auction event on April 14 from 12-4 p.m. The cost is $9 for adults, $4 for children 12 and under. Gamblers Anonymous meetings

If you or someone you love has a gambling addiction, Gamblers Anonymous may be able to help. Gamblers Anonymous meetings will take place on Tuesday and Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman. Another G.A. meeting is offered on Sunday at 7:30 p.m. at the Christ Presbyterian Church, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (Cornersburg). There is no charge for the meetings, although collections are taken up at each meeting to provide for coffee, sugar and creamer, treats and free literature. The average contribution given by members at most meetings is $2. Meetings last about 1.5 hours and are both closed meetings, or, you must have suffered from a gambling addiction to attend.

Friendly Squares host April square dance

The Friendly Squares will host their monthly local square dance on April 13 from 7:30-10 p.m. at the Niles SCOPE Center, located at 14 E. State St. in Niles. Gene Hammond will be the caller and Frankie Hammond will be cuing line dances. 1970’s Disco will be the theme. This will be a high/low dance with alternating tips for new dancers currently taking lessons and tips for more experienced dancers. Dress is casual and light refreshments will be served. Cardinal Mooney High School announces 16th annual “Celebrate Mooney” auction

Cardinal Mooney High School has set the date for its 16th annual fundraising auction as April 13. The largest fundraising event of the year will take place at the school, located at 2545 Erie St, Youngstown, between 5:30 and 11 p.m. Cocktails and silent auction to begin at 5:30 p.m. with dinner at 7 p.m. This year’s honorary chairwoman is CMHS teacher, mentor and Cardinals sports enthusiast, Nancy Shugart. YWCA accepting entries for 37th annual Women’s Art Exhibition

YWCA Mahoning Valley is accepting entries for its 37th Annual Women Artists: A Celebration! Art Show to take place June 28 through July 26 at YWCA’s downtown Youngstown office, located at 25 W. Rayen Ave. The art exhibition showcases work by local, regional and national women artists. The juried show features all media, including paintings, drawings, photographs, fiber art, sculpture, ceramics, jewelry, videography and metal work. Returning for a second time is a juried show for young women ages 14-17 from Mahoning and Trumbull counties. The show will feature seventeen works selected by jurors from the YWCA Women Artists Committee and will run in conjunction with the Women Artists show. Two-dimensional work is eligible for the 17 Under 17 show. Entry forms for both shows are available at YWCA’s offices in Youngstown and Warren and on the YWCA’s website at ywcamahoningvalley.org/women-artists. Entries are due by April 8. Priscilla Roggenkamp, Associate Professor of Art at Ashland University, will serve as the juror for the 2019 show. A ticketed Preview Party will take place on June 28 from 6-9 p.m. at the YWCA. PSHS Class of 1969 to reunite on Aug. 3

The Poland High School Class of 1969 will host its 50th class reunion on Aug. 3 at the Reserve Run Golf Course’s Another Round Bar and Grille. Throughout the next few months, former classmates will meet to finalize plans for the evening event along with plans for additional get together activities on Aug. 2 and Aug. 4. The next meeting of the planning committee will take place at 6 p.m. on Feb. 13 at the Little Red Schoolhouse, located at 4515 Center Road in Poland Township. Classmates interested in helping with the reunion are invited to attend the meeting.
