Friday, April 12, 2019

Customers can help provide food to those in need by tearing off a $1, $5 or $10 coupon at the cash register at select Giant Eagle locations in Columbiana, Mahoning and Trumbull counties through April 27. The donation will be added to their grocery bill. Non-perishable food items may also be placed in designated bins at the front of the stores.

“In 2018, Giant Eagle stores in our community raised more than $114,000 through Check Out Hunger coupons. Giant Eagle’s efforts enabled the food bank to provide more than 684,000 meals last year. We simply could not do what we do without the support of great friends like Giant Eagle,” said Michael Iberis, executive director, Second Harvest Food Bank.

Harvest for Hunger is one of the largest annual, community-wide food and funds drives in the nation, and takes place in 21 counties in northeast Ohio during March and April. The campaign is a collaborative effort of four food banks, including Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley, the Greater Cleveland Food Bank, Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank and Second Harvest Food Bank of North Central Ohio. All funds raised and food collected in Columbiana, Mahoning and Trumbull counties will remain in local communities to feed friends and neighbors.

Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley, a member of Feeding America, provides food to those in need in the tri-county area through 160 programs provided by hunger-relief organizations, which include church pantries, homeless shelters, soup kitchens, shelters for battered women and after-school programs.
