Dunham leads Boardman to fourth place finish

Boardman junior Mitchel Dunham raced to a first place finish, outpacing 204 other athletes to lead the Spartans to a fourth place finish at the Bulldog Invitational Aug. 25 in Green Township. Boardman improved to 17-4 on the season to finish the opening week of the 2018 campaign.

Finishing behind Dunham was sophomore Frank Bero in fifth place in a time of 17:19, junior River Flatley in 24th in a time of 18:21, sophomore Caydin Newberry in 29th at 18:38 and sophomore Justin Maloney in 30th place with a time of 18:38 as well.

“This was a very good meet,” said Boardman Head Coach John Phillips. “All the teams were very good and all are Division I schools in our region, if we want to have a good season we need to race against talented Division I teams.”

The Spartan junior varsity team opened its season at Green and placed second overall. The junior varsity team was led by junior Jackson Lipka at 19:11, senior Andrew Beichner at 19:23, senior Payton Torres at 20:01, sophomore Michael Halchuck at 20:11 and junior Steven Moradian at 20:17.

Setting new personal bests at Green were Flatley, Bero, Halchuck, freshman Ben Alvarico at 20:20, freshman Jake Blazina at 26:14, freshman Josh Cubarrubia at 26:18, freshman Trey DePietro at 22:12, freshman Jack Graff at 22:21 and freshman Noah Shurrel at 24:01.
