Chainsaw safety class

Chainsaws are helpful tools for landowners and foresters alike, but they are most effective when maintained correctly and operated in a safe manner. The chainsaw safety class will run from 12-2 p.m. on Oct. 30 at the Mahoning County Extension Office, located at 490 S. Broad Street in Canfield. Program speaker Lee Beers, OSU Extension, will cover safe chainsaw handling and operating techniques, and will include a live demonstration of chainsaw safety checks. Registration for this event is $15, which includes program handouts. Registration can be mailed or dropped off at Mahoning County Extension. Space is limited and is filled on a first come, first serve basis. Canfield High School earns national recognition for eighth consecutive year

The National Speech and Debate Association, the honor society for middle and high school speech and debate, has named its Top 100 schools in the nation for the 2017-2018 school year. Canfield High School is ranked 98 out of more than 3,500 schools nationwide. Members earn points and degrees through the honor society, based on competitive and service-related activities, ranging from the Degree of Merit with 25 or more points to the Degree of Premier Distinction with 1,500 or more points. Additionally, due to the incredibly high number of students involved in the speech and debate program and the degrees they have earned through competition, Canfield is ranked among to top 3 percent of schools nationwide and earned membership in the Association’s prestigious Societe’ de 300. Recipient schools are published in “Rostrum,” the national magazine of high school speech and debate.

Tales to tails

Read to your favorite therapy dogs at the Canfield library on Nov. 5 at 6 p.m. This helps develop reading skills, promotes confidence and encourages a love of reading. Bring a book of your choice or they will find one for you. This event is for children in grades kindergarten and up. Therapy dogs are provided by Pet Partners of Greater Youngstown, a local Pet Therapy group.

Bonding with babies and books

This event is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months. There will be 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize at the Canfield library every Thursday except Thanksgiving (Nov. 22) in November at 10 a.m.

Tales and talk for 2s and 3s

Join the Canfield library every Tuesday in November at 10 a.m. for developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child (ages 2-3) become a successful reader.

Gotta Move story time

This event is for children ages 2-5 who are accompanied by a caregiver. Join the Canfield library every Wednesday in November at 10 a.m. for a variety of musical and movement activities that appeal to the “young and restless,” stimulate brain development and motivate language learning. Adults and children, get ready to act out stories and rhymes, sing and dance, talk and play.

Family movie

Join the Canfield library on Nov. 3 at 2:30 p.m. for a Saturday Movie Matinee. Bring your own snacks and drinks to enjoy during the movie. Children age 7-years and younger must be with an adult.

Movie Night

Join the Canfield library on Nov. 1 at 6 p.m. for a movie night where they will be watching a newly released DVD. Feel free to bring your own small snacks and drinks. This event is for adults and teens. Children under the age of 7 must be accompanied by an adult. The movie will be either PG or PG 13.

Mah-Jongg Mondays

Practice your new skill to rattle the tiles and join the fun each Monday in November from 1-3 p.m. at the Canfield library. Bring your own Mah-Jongg set or share with a friend. Mah-Jongg sets not provided. This event is for adults.

Chair yoga

Pay as you attend for this yoga class at the Canfield library every Friday in November at 10 a.m. Class is $10 a session and meets every Friday. Dress comfortably. This event is for adults.

Cardinal Mooney to host annual eighth-grade day

Cardinal Mooney High School will host its annual eighth-grade day on Nov. 13 from 8:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. at the school, located at 2545 Erie Street in Youngstown. Students currently in eighth grade from all area parochial, public and charter schools are invited to spend the day in classes ranging from computer science and math to art and theology. Gamblers Anonymous meetings

If you or someone you love has a gambling addiction, Gamblers Anonymous, the only known remedy for arresting such an illness, may be able to help. A meeting of Gamblers Anonymous will take place on Fridays at 7:30 p.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman. Another G.A. meeting will take place on Sundays at 7:30 p.m. at the Christ Presbyterian Church, located at at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (Cornersburg). There is no charge for the meetings, although collections are taken up at each meeting to provide for coffee, sugar and creamer, treats and free literature. The average contribution given by members at most meetings is $2. Meetings last about one-and-a-half hours and are both closed meetings, or, you must have suffered from a gambling addiction to attend. The Youngstown-area G.A. groups are friendly and welcoming and established members love to see new members join the fold. They are more than happy to help suffering gamblers and are knowledgeable about how to stay clean from this dreadful disease.

Christie to sign books

Mill Creek ABWA to have anniversary meeting

The Mill Creek Chapter of ABWA (American Business Women’s Association) will host its Nov. 13 anniversary meeting at A la Cart Catering in Canfield beginning with networking at 6 p.m. and dinner at 6:30 p.m. The menu will include roast beef, southern baked chicken, sand trap potatoes, California blend vegetables, cole slaw, tossed salad, tomato, pepper and onion salad, rolls, coffee or tea and cake for dessert. The cost is $23 per person. Reservations may be made by calling Mary Brown at 330-770-6253 by Nov. 8. The Austintown Fitch choir will be the entertainment for the evening to help the chapter celebrate their 56th anniversary. The public is welcome.

Trick-or-Treat in Canfield will take place on Oct. 31 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Have a safe and fun Halloween!

Zentangle

Have fun and create unique art at the Canfield library’s Zentangle program on Oct. 29 at 6:30 p.m. Learn what Zentangle is and how it benefits the mind and body. Retired teachers association to meet

Mahoning Retired Teachers Association will meet on Nov. 14 at Drake’s Landing in Canfield. The social hour will begin at 11 a.m. and lunch at 11:45 a.m., followed by the meeting and program. Susan Harris will preside. The American Legion will present colors in honor of Veteran’s Day. Scholarship chairperson Sonia Tsvetkoff will introduce and present MRTA’s scholarships to YSU School of Education students. Deana DeLuca will present a program on “Mindfulness and Meditation.” This month’s community service project will be donations to the Canfield Veterans Auxiliary. Grilled chicken salad or the buffet, which will feature roasted turkey, will be served. All area educators are invited to attend. Friendly Squares dance in November

The Friendly Squares will host their monthly square dance on Nov. 10 from 7:30-10 p.m. at the Niles SCOPE Center, located at 14 E. State St. in Niles. Gene Hammond will be the caller and Frankie Hammond will be cuing line dances. The theme for the dance is Veterans. This will be a high/low dance with alternating tips for new dancers currently taking lessons and tips for more experienced dancers. Dress is casual and light refreshments will be served. A Night at the Oasis - a 1920’s murder mystery dinner

Join in with “A Night at the Oasis,” an original script 1920’s murder mystery dinner to benefit Camp Stambaugh, located at 3712 Leffingwell Road in Canfield. This event will take place on Nov. 17 at 6:30 p.m. in the dining hall at the camp. You will have your choice of one of three entrees - prime rib, chicken francese or crab-stuffed cod - along with salad, role and dessert. 1920’s dress is optional but suggested. Advanced ticket sales only and donations are $100 per couple or $60 for a single. All proceeds will benefit Camp Stambaugh, which will be celebrating its 100th anniversary in 2019. Come dressed in your Hogwarts best, be sorted into your house and try the trivia challenge at this event at the Canfield library on Oct. 27 at 11 a.m. Make an awesome craft. Enjoy a snack and drawings. This event is for children of all ages.

Annual Danielle Scott Memorial Writing Contest

Danielle Scott was a beloved Teen Advisory Board member whom was lost to cancer. The Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County is sponsoring the 10th annual Danielle Scott Memorial Writing Contest to honor Danielle and her love of writing. Teens may enter one poem with a theme of their choice. Entries may be submitted online at http://www.libraryvisit.org/teens/danielle or on standard 8.5 inch by 11 inch paper to any public library in Mahoning County Oct. 1-31. If you submit your entry online, make sure you select the writing type (poem) and be sure to include your phone number. Hard copies must be typed. Be sure to include your name, telephone number, grade and school on your entry. Entries are not returnable. One winner will be chosen and will be awarded a plaque and a monetary prize. All entrants must be in grades 7-12 and either live in or attend school in Mahoning County.
