Ohio State loses wideout Austin Mack

COLUMBUS

Ohio State receiver Austin Mack is out indefinitely following foot surgery.

Buckeyes coach Urban Meyer confirmed Tuesday that Mack would be sidelined after injuring his foot Saturday in a loss to Purdue.

Meyer called it “a big loss” and said Mack could be back in time for a bowl game.

The junior is the team’s fourth leading receiver with 26 catches for 331 yards and a touchdown. He had one catch Saturday before leaving with the injury. He had surgery Monday.

No. 11 Ohio State has a bye this week before hosting Nebraska on Nov. 3.

TCU’s Turpin dismissed from team

FORT WORTH, TEXAS

TCU receiver and returner KaVontae Turpin has been dismissed from the team after a second charge surfaced against him following his weekend arrest on an assault charge for an alleged altercation with his girlfriend.

Coach Gary Patterson said Tuesday that Turpin will no longer be allowed to be on the team.

Patterson announced Monday that Turpin was suspended after being arrested by Fort Worth police following an incident Saturday night, hours after he had a 99-yard kickoff return and a 41-yard TD catch in TCU’s 52-27 home loss to No. 8 Oklahoma.

A criminal complaint from New Mexico later revealed that Turpin was arrested in March while there during spring break to visit a girlfriend. The Fort Worth Star-Telegram first reported on the New Mexico case.

No verdict in NCAA trial

NEW YORK

A jury has completed a second day of deliberations without a verdict in the trial of three men accused of defrauding schools by giving cash to families of college basketball recruits.

The jury deliberated over eight hours Tuesday in Manhattan federal court.

They are deciding the fate of Adidas sports marketing manager James “Jim” Gatto, aspiring sports agent Christopher Dawkins and Merl Code, a former Adidas consultant. They’ve all pleaded not guilty.

Their lawyers say the men broke no laws and at most violated NCAA rules by helping families as they steered top-tier recruits toward schools sponsored by Adidas.

Jurors gave defense lawyers hope that their arguments found a receptive audience when they asked Tuesday to review the cross-examination of the government’s star witness, a former Adidas consultant.

FIFA pushing Club World Cup

A person with knowledge of the talks tells The Associated Press FIFA President Gianni Infantino is doubling down on his Club World Cup plans with a proposal for an annual tournament despite European soccer’s resistance to any competition that challenges the supremacy of the Champions League.

The revised proposal amends an initial plan to play a 24-team Club World Cup every four years. The new format will be discussed at the FIFA Council meeting in Rwanda on Friday, the person said. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the discussions were confidential.
