Boardman JV football falls to Barberton
The Boardman High School junior varsity team fell to Barberton 34-14 on Oct. 13. The loss evened the Boardman junior varsity team’s record to 4-4 on the year, with their last contest of the season forthcoming on Oct. 20 at home against cross-town rival Austintown Fitch. Kickoff for that contest is scheduled for 10 a.m. in Spartan Stadium. Although scoring opportunities were harder than usual to come by, some of the Spartans’ typical offensive standouts did manage to muster some points for their squad. Junior Quarterback/WR Wrentie Martin connected with junior Wideout Zach Johnson for a long score in the first quarter. The subsequent 2-point conversion try was unsuccessful. The other score for the Spartans came on defensive side of the ball, when sophomore OLB Carmine LaManna came up and made a nice hit on the opposing ball carrier, and forced a fumble. Junior Defensive End Justin Cina who’s relentless pursuit to the football paid off for him, as he was able to scoop the loose football, and return it about 20 yards for a defensive score. On the 2-point attempt after the score, the junior QB/WR tandem of Zach Ryan and Wrentie Martin connected once again, when Ryan was able to find Martin in the back of the end zone to complete the 2-point play.
Boardman boys finish season in second
The Boardman High School boys cross country team finished in second place at the AAC Red Tier Championship on Oct. 13. Junior Mitchel Dunham and sophomores Frank Bero and Caydin Newberry earned First Team All AAC status by placing third, fourth and seventh, respectively, at the All American Conference Championship at Boardman High School. Boardman finished second overall behind first place Canfield and ahead of Austintown Fitch, Howland and Ashtabula Lakeside, Warren Harding did not have enough athletes to qualify as a team this season. The Spartans ran in difficult conditions and still were able to place six of the top 25 runners. Earning Second Team All AAC status was sophomore Anthony Marshall in 11th. Sophomore Beau Gorby was 23rd and sophomore Justin Maloney was 25th for the Spartans.
Glenwood cross country teams place in championship competition
Both the Boardman Glenwood Junior High School girls cross country team and boys cross country team finished in third place at the 2018 AAC Red Tier Junior High Cross Country Championships on a wet and muddy Boardman High School course on Oct. 13. The top runners for the girls were Lauren Bero - third overall, Morgan Auck, Arianna Moffo, Morgan Russo, Mackenzie Riccitelli, Olivia Pickens and Samantha DiFabio. The top runners for the boys were Josh Zilavy - fifth, Ben Zilavy - ninth, Brady DePietro, Brock Farris, Ethan DunLany, Andrew Yocum and Jeffry Markovitch. The team is coached by Mr. Basista and Mr. Lenhart.
Junior high cross country teams place second
Both the Boardman Glenwood Junior High School girls cross country team and boys cross country team finished in second place overall at the 2018 Mahoning Valley Junior High Cross Country Championships, defeating some of the areas tops teams. Many team members ran their best races of the season. The top runners for the girls were Lauren Bero (eighth overall), Morgan Russo, Arianna Moffo, Cara Zawrotuk, Morgan Auck, Olivia Pickens and Mackenzie Riccitelli. The top runners for the boys were Ben Zilavy (sixth), Josh Zilavy, Ethan Dunlany, Brady DePietro, Brock Farris, Jeffry Markovitch and Jimmy Pirone.
